The crop factor in 4K also affects image stabilization. You get a little extra zoom in 4K than 1080p so movement is more pronounced.

I originally had the camera set for manual focus so I could use the front ring to control focus and avoid the autofocus putting the shot completely out of focus due to strobe lights, but using manual focus while looking through the tiny viewfinder was a pain.

Is there no focus peaking?

Is there no focus peaking?

In manual focus mode there is the "Manual Focus Assist" function that enlarges the image either full screen or picture-in-picture, but it only works before you hit record. Once you hit record and the lead singer starts running around, you're basically guessing with the focus ring. I've also set one of the Fn buttons to activate autofocus in a pinch, but the only problem with that is once again you can only set what zone the camera's going to focus on before hitting record. Once you hit record you can't change the focus zone so you end up having to adjust the framing so the subject is in the hashmark where you have your focusing set and then autofocus then reframe the shot back to how you want it to look.

Looks great.  I'm still saving for my GH4 though.   8)  I've been doing multicam since 2010.  Feel free to ask any questions.

Google reviews state that there is focus peaking,fn2 button perhaps.Focus peaking is mandatory for 4k,no way i trust auto and the screens arent 4k so not possible to judge focus.

Are most of you guys shooting in 4k and then converting to 1080 or just shooting in 1080 to avoid converting later? thoughts?

Bottom Line Up Front:  Always shoot in the highest resolution possible.

I shot several shows in 2010 with an HD cam in standard definition because I was under the assumption that hi-def video took up a lot more space than standard definition video and I only had two 16GB cards at the time.  I couldn't author blu-ray discs back then anyway - so I figured no big loss.

But then sometime later I found out that the difference in file sizes was actually rather minimal.  And then when I started authoring blu-ray discs I realized that all those great shows could have been blu-rays instead of DVDs.

So here I am in 2016 with a camera that can shoot 4K video - but I can't author 4K discs (yet).

Even though 4K video is much larger (in terms of file size) - I have vowed not to make the same mistake twice, so I always shoot in the highest resolution because 1) storage space is cheap and getting cheaper every month, and 2) I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I'll be able to author 4K discs.

This. I already produced more than 2 TB of 4k video this year but it is so worth it
When the BluRay codec for 4k is ready (h265 i assume) then the file sizes will go down half anyway because that codec processes up to 50% better than h264!

Is this camera still restricted to 15 minutes in 4K? Really want a new camera (still rocking the HX9V) but want opinions on the 15 minute limit...(am I too worried?)

Yup 15 minute limit. I only get concerned about the limit if of a band decides to play a medley or three full songs without stopping. When I shoot a show I tend to stop and start between songs.

Looking to upgrade from ZS7 to a ZS100.  This looks like the camera to get.

The zoom goes from a 12x on the ZS7 to a 10x on tha ZS100, but perhaps I can dip into the 20x zoom?

How about modes and times for the ZS100?  Does it still do 720p umlimited like the ZS7?  The 1080p 29 min, 4K 15 min?

And audio wise, the ZS7 isn't horrible, is the ZS100 comparable?

Thanks,
Bill

This cam has more focal length in 4k (370mm) than the ZS7, but less in FullHD (280mm). The ZS7 has a max. of 300mm if I am not mistaken.

i. Zoom can let it go further but I would try to avoid it unless taping in daylight.

4k max. 15 minutes, FullHD unlimited for the US models I believe, 30min max. for Euro models

The cam audio could be worse, check out my videos of KoRn in Luxembourg as well as Disturbed videos, they have the cam audio: https://www.youtube.com/user/blubbaiu/videos
