Can I make my own windscreens for DPA4061 mics for cheap?
« on: January 15, 2022, 05:16:32 PM »
Mine are foam and are crumbling. The ones I have now probably are not meant for DPAs and are taped on. I would think I could use some fabric or cheap foam. I have seen some on ebay for cheap, but they look like the are too big. I guess I could cut them up an tape them on. Any advice? thanks in advance.

You have to make sure the material is acoustically transparent.
I know Rycote sells the furry material by the sheet, but I haven't seen foam by the sheet.
FEL Communications has inexpensive foam covers. Maybe the 5mm is close enough for the DPA4061 if you are OK with continuing using tape.

Not sure why you want to make your own. I think these are what you need. They also come in white and tan.

I use generic  lapel mic screens, secured with tiny elastics  for my mics.
https://www.amazon.ca/Rubber-Elastic-Premium-Wedding-Hairstyle/dp/B07QJ4W7YT  (elastics)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/133635714550?hash=item1f1d4f2df6:g:GLkAAOSwe6dfY8ny (screens)
shipping sucks on this ebay  example  but try and find a Chinese supplier  I got a 50 pack  for about 10$ a few years ago.  now I haven't put these to gruelling tests as I have only taped outdoors a few times.
But they are more than sufficient for most HVAC noise.

Fortunately they don't require much windscreening as they aren't as susceptible to wind noise as most mics.

Any small to medium sized lav foam screen that fit snugly will do.  If outside the standard tiny size are usually sufficient, but a bit larger is beneficial if its really windy.

Last time outdoors a month back for a second stage rig that was in a gusty area I lost the small screens I had and substituted some small foam hair curlers from Dollar Tree.  Worked fine.

for HRTF, I wear a beanie over them.  I haven't been in extremely windy conditions, though; just mild breezes.
