Schoeps Double Mid-Side
« on: November 12, 2022, 01:07:32 AM »
After almost 10 years of recording mid-side I finally figured I had waited long enough to dabble in double mid-side technique and SRS designed this for me tonight.  I have the Schoeps Double Mid-Side plugin and now I need a show to try it at.

I thank Scott he drew it up but I am the happy recipient.  I am really looking forward to tweaking the stereo images with the plugin!  My only concern will be how much drag there may be on one side of the mount.  Hopefully, it is nothing that a velcro tie or two can't fix.

Thanks Kev!  No rush on the BWAF as you can see how long that kind of thing sat.  LOL   :guitarist:

Hi. There seems to be a misunderstanding about how to align the three capsules. Their diaphragms need to share a single, vertical center line among all three of them. In the photos, the bottom capsule is too far toward the back of the setup.

The four parallel sets of slits in the capsule housings of the MK 4 or MK 41 are some distance behind the diaphragm. They're inlets to the "delay line" that feeds the back of the diaphragm, so that rear-incident sound will arrive on both sides of the diaphragm simultaneously, thus canceling out. Let me see if I can mark up a photograph or drawing to show you ... OK, this definitely isn't perfect, but it's closer. It should also reduce the interference caused by having the base of the "hoop" be directly in front of the rear-facing capsule:

Are you going to use a blimp for wind protection?

Heck yes, that is the kind of post I needed to keep from wasting my time on misaligned mics.  Thank you, David!  I truly appreciate you seeing this post and chiming in!  I got the change into Scott and hopefully, my original order cancellation got to Shapeways in time.

Are you going to use a blimp for wind protection?

I really only record mid-side indoors so probably not.  If I was going the blimp route I probably would have just but a mount/blimp kit.
