Simple UA-5 question
« on: June 29, 2004, 12:30:10 AM »
To do 24/96 I would put Advanced On and select 96 right? And to do 24/48 I would do the same except select 48 right?

Thanks!

Actually you don't even need the Advanced switch on for 24/48.  Just 24/96.

I dunno, but a friend of mine uses it all the time for 24/48 and never turns on the advance switch.

From the UA-5 user manual, located in the handy dandy archival info area of this site:

Advanced mode
The UA-5 will operate in this mode when the rear panel Mode select switch is
turned ON.
The special driver included on the UA-5 Driver CD-ROM will be used,
allowing audio to be recorded/played/edited with high quality and stable timing.
In Advanced mode, audio signals can be transferred between the UA-5 and the
computer at a resolution of 24 bits and sampling frequencies of 44.1/48/96 kHz.
Select this mode if you are using an application that allows high-quality audio
recording/playback/editing, such as an application that supports 24 bit audio
(e.g., the Cakewalk series or Cool Edit) or an ASIO-compatible application (e.g.,
Cubase VST, Logic Audio, or SingerSongWriter).

Standard driver mode
The UA-5 will operate in this mode when the rear panel Mode select switch is
turned OFF.
The standard USB audio driver included with Windows will be used.
In standard driver mode, audio signals are transferred between the UA-5 and the
computer at a resolution of 16 bits and sampling frequencies of 44.1/48 kHz.
Select this mode if you are using an application that uses Window’s own
functionality, such as an application that uses the computer’s CD-ROM drive to
play back CD-audio, or an application that uses the software synthesizer included
with Windows.
The standard driver that is included with Windows does not support ASIO.
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

Bastard Mirth, beat me to it...

I dunno, but a friend of mine uses it all the time for 24/48 and never turns on the advance switch.

From the UA-5 manual:

Quote
Advanced Mode
The UA-5 will operate in this mode when the rear panel Mode select switch is turned ON...In Advanced Mode, audio signals can be transferred between the UA5- and computer at a resolution of 24 bits and sampling frequencies of 44.1 / 48 / 96 kHz.

Standard Driver Mode
The UA-5 will operate in this mode when the rear panel Mode select switch is turned OFF...In Standard Driver Mode, audio signals are transferred between the UA-5 and the computer at a resolution of 16-bits and sampling frequencies of 44.1 / 48 kHz.

The way I read this, the UA-5 ADV switch needs to be turned ON to record in 24-bits, regardless of the sample rate.

He might be telling the recording software to record at 24 bit, but he's only sending 16 bits from the UA5.  I think Wave Lab has some kind of "bit-meter", maybe he can test some of the recordings he's done in this manner to see if they are truly 24 bit.  I think not.
