Topic: A good mic stand for Audix 1290

Looking for something very solid and a small foot print (if possible).  Um, not sure what else to ask in regards to mic stands, so feel free to express your opinion and experieces and especially a url to buy a stand that's recommended, thanks!

Check the Archive | Mics & Setup for a thread on commonly used stands, specs on a few, and links to sites that carry stands frequently used by tapers:  EBay ("light stands") and B&H for Bogen / Manfrotto.  Also note the adapters you'll need for converting most light-stands to the proper threads for mics / stereo bars.

No url, but I highly reccomend APIC stands - the 8' one should suit your needs. It packs down to 21" and has a tiny footprint. The Bogen 3373 is comparable - packs to 20" and has a small footprint if you cut off 6-8" off the feet. You can get the Bogen at b&h and the APIC by phone only (the number is in the archive section about stands).

Thanks for the rec as well.  I basically plan on taping from a seat for dmb in July which is the reason why i want as small a foot print as possible and not to get in the way of people behind me.  I hope it's doable

for amphitheater shows, footprint doesnt have to be an issue.  I never open my stand up at amps and even seating at arenas...keep it compacted, and tape it in between 2 seats...raise it from there....opening it when you are taping fob at shows like that will likely get you the ire of the venue staff who will claim fire hazzard...you keep it compacted, you are more likely to have them avoid you

Ah, that explains a lot then!  Duct tape?  Gaffer's tape?  Just wondering what you use to avoid getting the sticky residue on your stand.  I always wondered what the heck a lot of dmb tapers do to setup their stands.  However, is it safe to tape a mic stand to collapseable chairs like on the floor of MSG?  Dmb is playing at Randall's Island this year and i've never been to this venue so i'm a bit curious as to whether its just an open field or a large venue like Camden or PNC.

you can use duct or gaffers...residue has never been a big deal for me.  As for when they are detached seats, you have to use your judgement as to what works...sometimes it will sometimes it wont.

As for Randalls Island, I have heard there will be some seats, but it is also a field, so I have no info to help there...

Just use duct tape.  Gaffers really isn't worth the cost just to secure our mics stands.

actually I disagree...gaffers sticks better to things like concrete, the chairs in amps, floors in clubs....

Never had a problem with the duct tape, but I've never tried to tape my stand to concrete.

Either zip ties or some of those big-ass velcro cable straps are also good ways to secure a stand in between seats. The velcro straps are reusable too...and no sticky adhesive mess to worry about on your stand. I don't know how well they'd work for LD mics, but they work great for some lowpro action.
