powering a UA5 with a 9.6v/1600 maH RC...Possible???
« on: February 16, 2008, 01:59:44 PM »
so Im abiu to bite on a UA5, but Im not in the running for spending $ on batteries and what not. With a custom cable, would I be able to power the UA-5 (using its built in phantom power) w/ a 9.6v/1600 maH RC batt???

also, what would my cheapest options be for powering the UA-5 if this is not possible....

Yes, depending on the voltage needed. They make RC batts that are different voltage. I had a UA-5 (miss it sometimes) and it was powered by a pair of RC batts connected to a specially made cable. In case you don't want to mess with making a cable, there are several folks here who will take care of you.

On another note, your rats are probably the best I've ever made! Very well done, I just need to add the drawstring and they'll be in the mail. Been a little cluster f@cked lately with school and 3 shows in a row. 3 being tonight.

Here is a site that I bought my 10,000 mAh RC batt from, in case your looking for cheap. Also, I bought the charger from eBay for $25 brand new. Search something like "9.6v universal charger". Or I can send you the link in a little while. Wife is calling me for breakfast/lunch!

Mike,

If you plan on running a UA-5 and a JB3 I have a "Juicebox" that will run both of them off the same 9V lion dvd battery. Send me a pm if you are serious and I will hook you up, no problem. I don't; however, have a 9v lion which you will have to purchase separately.

UA5=500mah/hour
1600 would give you 3+ hours for a show. I always carried a extra rat shack 1600mah battery just in case.

It seems everyone's moved on to the 9.0V Li-ion Wally World DVD batts. I was curious about the 9.6V/9.0V difference from the RC batts. My UA5 came with the AC power cord modded for an RC batt (split-y Tamaya females to accept Kyosho males from AC or DC). Given that the NiMH 9.6V 5000mA costs the same as a 9.0V 5400mA Wally-DVD and the UA-5 spec. is 9.0V (and the NiMH discharge rates ranging from 10-30 amps confuse me no end), I'll prolly take the safe route with the Li-ion/adaptaplug for remote power.

My question is, can I be reasonably comfortable that having been run on 9.6V by the previous owner for a while wasn't harmful to the box?

How do I power the UA-5 in the field?

The UA-5 accepts both 9v and 12v.  Most UA-5 owners seem to be running DIY RC battery packs for their power, though some are using DIY or retail SLA battery packs.

How long will my battery last?

Depends on the battery's capacity (usually measured in mAH, or AH).  The UA5 draws about 450mA.  Divide your battery capacity (mAH) by the current draw (450mA) to get an approximate run-time.  For example, a 3000mAH 9.6v RC battery will yield ~6.6 hours of run-time (3000/450) .  Better to be a bit conservative in your calculations for practical usage, though - the battery may not be fully charged and you likely won't eek out every last bit of juice from the battery.  A good 5 hours is probably a reasonable estimate in this case.

you are fine with 9, 9.6, even some people have run ua5 on 7v dvd batteries
