my Naiant preamp arrived
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:05:43 AM »
Hi
My Naiant preamp just arrived!
I'm quite excited to try it out and see how it performs.
As far as its build quality- it looks first-rate!

I'll have a lot of experimenting to do!! ;D

Interesting, can this be powered in the field, or is it an AC-only model?

I'm very curious about your setup as well as I am in the market for a small, portable preamp and am leaning towards the Naiant unit.

If you have a little patience, 5 Fish's TS-2 preamp might be available soon.

No offence but this thread is about Niant and not FF. I dont think its cool to flog FF in a Niant thread. Just like it would not be cool to flog Niant in a FF thread...Just a bit of advice.

I've been considering buying a phantom box from Naiant but it only does +18
but the response I've gotten from them has been helpful and friendly
and their equipment seems to have a lot of thought put into it
keep us posted on how you like the pre?

LOL...I'd be interested in seeing the mathematics used to define the physical states of 'roadkill' and 'road rash'!

As always, I appreciate the support.  I don't mind a comparison too much, this isn't the Retail board.  My product is quite different from what the TS-2 will be.  Of course my product isn't a single configuration, it's totally custom for each customer.

But if you configure my IPA like a TS-2, minus some of the TS-2s switches, you'd get something like this (TS-2 figures estimated based on what I recall from those threads):

                         TS-2              IPA
Gain                  +72dB           +60dB
Noise                <-126dBA      -115dBA
CMRR                 >70dB          >50dB
Max Level           +24dBV        +13dBV
Metering              5 LEDs        1 extremely keen green/red LED
Power                 1.5W            0.3W
Battery               external       internal 9V
Size                   7"x6"x1.5"?    5"x2.75"x1.25"
Run Over By Car   road rash      roadkill
Price                  $500             ~$180

hey Jon,
thanx for the spec comp
I am sure yours is more than worth the $

I will say all your products are first class!
your input here is always great! keep up the awesome work!

cool

thats the first thing I thought - take a screwdriver to it and take pictures of it's insides and then pictures of it in the gear chain

This particular unit is kinda the "kitchen sink" model; there is a LOT of stuff crammed inside there.  This unit is 4 channel with independent gain control, switchable PIP and phantom with LED, power switch & LED, meter LED, 50/60dB gain . . . it's pretty much the works.

If you're dying for a pic of some guts, I'll post one of another I'm working on in a day or two, rather than ask a customer to crack open their unit . . . but I'll do that in my Retail thread:

http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,107750.0.html

I would like to see the guts when you get something apart.

Thanks!

What mics will you be running with it?

Hi! I had no idea there'd be so many replies in this thread!

I am a phd student doing social science research in rural areas in China.  Every year, I take a small team of 3 fieldworkers and we interview people for my research project.  Each of the interviewers is equipped with a recorder and mics suitable to the place they will be doing the interview.

Because all my equipment must be small and serve many functions, I mainly use Chris Church's fantastic CA11 cardiod mics. I'm going to start using some CA14s soon too.   I'm also using a Rode NTG-2 and a AKG C1000s also when I have time and space in my gear bag to haul them around for voice and video interviews in China.

None of my mics are not here so sadly I'm not going to be able to test the preamp for a few days.

I was incredibly tempted to open up the preamp and take photos, but after taking a brief peek inside and seeing the a mass of circuit boards and wires neatly arranged, I decided that it would be decidedly unwise to do so! :)   Perhaps Jon from Naiant can post some photos when he has the opportunity.

With this particular configuration, I can use my Church CA11, CA14 mics or the XLR plug mics and never have to worry about what mics I'm carrying, or which preamp to bring. It runs on 4 AA batteries.

No "offence" CC, but he didn't flog FF's pre project, he touted it in the quoted post.  The worst thing the man is guilty of is a nOOb mistake if indeed there even is one.  Plenty of OT stuff gets posted that doesn't raise an eyebrow.   ::)

I think I used the wrong words.. But anyway he was very cool about it and all is good. I really was not going to say anything. I dont know what OT is though :)

mine wasn't just a guess, it was based on contextual information....   ;)

Pretty sure that "Plenty of Output Transformer stuff gets posted that doesn't raise an eyebrow" isn't exactly what the post was meant to read.
