« on: September 06, 2008, 02:20:31 PM »
my bag is hurtin (its a cannon still camera bag, but worked perfectly for awhile. Looking to pick something up, possibly a lowepro Nova series. Anyone have any suggestions on what would fit wellm, and protect nicely???

Trying to fit a UA-5, shocks, mics in flat 8"x4" cases, 2 sets of 10 foot XLR'S.  A few extra patch cables (RCA, 1/8" etc...) w a litle room to spare.

But the 5 is probably overkill in this situation. I used to keep a UA5, JB3, an optical cable in a small cigar tin and two of our favorite DVD batts in the main section of a Nova 1. In the front pocket I kept a tbar with SSM mounts mounted and Berliner CM33s in the mounts. In the lid pocket I kept a small wintech c clamp. I either had cables coiled and ran the strap through them or had them clipped in some caribiners attached to the side of the bag. This left the back pocket for a note pad and the side mesh pockets for earplugs, flashlight, pens/sharpies, misc adapters, etc. A very tight fit but it also didn't advertise what all was crammed inside. If you want some room to spare I would think a Nova 3 (+-1) would be ideal.

True!  The nova 5 is so big that for a while I had two+ rigs in it.  I had two pairs of mics, two pair of windscreens, four large shock mounts, four dvd batteries, a PMD 660, a UA5, two JB3's, a juice box, a windtech clamp, a super clamp, a an akg stereo bar, a vert bar, two sets of 15' cables, assorted power cables, optical cables, tent stakes, various adapters, pens papers, and a flask of patron in the rainfly pocket.

Nova 4 when i ran 1 ua-5 > h120, the nova 5 when i ran 2 ua-5's > 2 h120's.  Now a backpack with the r-4 & mini-mp.

I still have the nova 5 and it's in (dare I say) "Mint Conditon" ;D.  It actually really just lightly used. Let me know if you are intersested.

This sounds familiar....the more stuff I buy the more compelled I am to take it all with me to any open taping situation.

QFT. The main benefit of going for a waist pack is the possibility to wear it under a fluffy jacket. If it's too big, it defeats the purpose.

My favorite bags for this size of rig in order of preference would be:
High Sierra Corkscrew
Deuter Square Hip (I aka 40267, II aka 40277)
Lowe Alpine Mesa Runner.
Lowepro Nova 3

I've also heard good things about Mountainsmith, but never had a chance to see any IRL.
