Topic: Using a 6v 12aH SLA to power JB3

Ok, -T for me starting another JB3 power thread, but after looking and looking.... the info is so spread out I can't find a good answer (though it is p'roll out there somewhere!)

Right now, for festivals, I am using a 12v wheelchair battery which will power me through 3 full days, but the wife is tired of having to carry the damn thing in and out <G> I'm using 6v12ah sla's to power the V3, and I have a bunch of them and a couple chargers already so I would like to stick with these batteries.

I know a VR wont work for a 1v drop.

does anyone have instructions for dropping the 1v?

I recall Doug Oade suggesting over on his forum that adding a diode (two>) on the

• side will drop the voltage ~1v.  But...I don't remember any specifics around specs.  I've also seen it mentioned here.  I'll dig around there and here and see if I can find any specifics, it'd be good to have in the archive, anyway.

you're going to find it difficult to regulate a 6v down to a 5v to run the jb3. even if you went with a 5v zener diode app., you need a bit of voltage differential to make it work.

imho, the walmart type lithium ion 9v batteries are the BEST performers out there and quite affordable (~$20-25).

from my experience and a few others in some of the other posts about the jb3 the 6v sla will not work.  Just like marc said it's difficult to drop the voltage down.  Best thing get a small 12v and drop it down with the sima adaptor

does anyone know off the top of their head what the draw is for the jb3?

for some reason 500mah comes to mind, but I've been doing too much soldering lately..

From the JB3 FAQ:

Thanks to Todd in Buffalo for these current draw measurements:

 * Boot-up and harddrive 'punches' : 750 mA spikes
 * Toggling thru the menus (back light on): 120 mA
 * At rest, no back light on: 70 mA
 * Recording: 230 mA with an occasional spike to 750 mA when the HD punches, I'm calling it 300mA.

Excuse me if this is stupid, but why don't you just run two of the 6v SLAs in series and then do what you've always done?

I've thought about that, the 6v sla's have neutric 4 pin xlrs attached, so I would need to make some sort of adaptor I suppose....
