Title: AKG 483
Post by: T.J. on October 08, 2004, 04:13:36 PM
i've heard a lot about these mic on these boards (everyone seems to like them). recorded a couple shows using them and really liked the results.  regardless i was wondering what other type of mics are comparable to the AKG 483's in terms of price and sound quality?

the MG M200/210/270 (SMS2000 bodies + M20/M21/M27 caps) are considered in the same class, price wise (maybe a bit more).

I wouldn't say they sound the same though.  I like them a little bit more actually, but it really comes down to personal preference.

~750-900(depending on the market, and recent AKG price increase) for 481's and ~$400 for a set of new ck63's.  Don't think anyone will be letting go of 483's.  ;D

haven't seen many 480's going lately.

Maybe look into the Audix 1290hc sound and see if you like it. The 1290c is supposed to sound like the 481s (according to people who own both). It's a good deal cheaper than the 480s though - contact Cascade Media for a great price!

What's a used set of akg's generally run?

I know they rarely, if ever, get a bad word around here.  I know they are less expensive than neumann/schoeps/dpa, maybe a used set of MG's?  I'd think akg with's caps would be 1K used or somewhere around there

there's a set of Gefell m210(bodies + caps) for $1000 in the yard sale...thats a steal considering Gefells recent price increase...new caps alone are more than that!

are AKG and MG's usually sold in pairs?  i was under the impression that one AKG 483 is sufficient for recording

you need a pair of mics for stereo recording..otherwise you are recording in mono
