Title: good price on used 603a/ka200n?
Post by: Simp-Dawg on February 27, 2004, 02:50:08 PM
think bout offering some cash for the pair in the yard sale + the v2 and trying to get an idea what a reasonable offer would be.  i don't necessarily need the whole package, though i bet i could sell off what i didn't need if i bought the whole thing.

These are my dream mics.  Simp forget the V2 and pair these mothers with a mp-2>SBM-1.  Ive got some of sleepypedros tapes for proof that this rig owns your face.

$1000-team MBHO
$350-mp-2
$450-SBM-1 stock

you're looking at $150 over the price of a v2 which would be about $650.  Do the mp-2>sbm-1 combo and the bass will the phatest shit ever.

I was just outside barstow when the drugs took hold :smoking:

I like the MP2/MBHO comba as well.  Have  friend out in New York that does a bunch of WEEN recordings with MBHO>MP2>ADC20...he does some nice stuff.
Although I wouldn't discount the V2 with the MBHO's either, I've got a couple tapes that are really nice with this combo.   (What doesn;t work well with a V2?).

You'd better move on that rig fast.  The whole rig is nice, just add a deck.  That's a nice setup for stealthing.....

Be aware that the pair for sale in the yard sale is not the 603a bodies, but rather the 603 bodies.  No actives can be used with the 603 bodies, they can only be run with the full bodies.  In order to use actives with that setup, new bodies (@ $500 each), along with active cables, would have to be added.

Something to think about...

I ran mp-2/modsbm-1 and v2/modsbm-1, preferred the V2/modsbm-1.

Ditto.  Much preferred V2 > modSBM01 to the MP2 > modSBM-1.

goose, there was another rig fo sale earlier with the actives...
but thanks for pointing that out.  i've had to be reminded a few times that the 603a is the only bodies that work with actives...however i'm still not sure if those can be run as full-bodied mics also?

Yup, you can run KA200/603A as full-bodied mics without the cables.

Josh:

I've got a pair of Josephson C-640's for sale.
Phil had them for a little while and thought they sounded just like the MBHO's. Ask him about them. They would be closer to the MBHO 648's than the 603's, because the Josephson's are transformer coupled. To my ears, this makes them slightly warmer than the 603's.

They were actually made my MB Quart. Josephson was the US distributor when I bought them in 1990.

I sent them off to MBHO to get them matched better by Mr. Haun. They are on the way back now. I want to sell them to get some ADK TL's.

If you want to borrow them for a whikle after they come back let me know.

Read about them here:

I spoke to this guy Marcus Demuth. He is the US distributor for the MBHO's. My capsules are essentually the same as the MBHO's. I was never very happy with the matching I got from Josephson. Marcus convinced me that Mr. Haun, the MBHO engineer in Germany, could match my capsules better. Don't ask me how, but me claims it can be done. The capsules are on the way back from Germany now, so I'll report back with news on whether it worked or not  when I have them in my hands again. Maybe he rebuilds them? Maybe he just swaps then out? Marcus quoted me $75 for matching plus shipping. I'm quite interested to see what was done.

I think the Pre/AD combo is also extremely dependent on the mics you are running with them...

Are there any sonic differences between the 603's and the 603a's?  So if I ran non actives on each of those bodies, would there be any noticeable difference?  Thanks!
