What's inside a dpa4022 xlr?
« on: May 10, 2010, 02:47:09 PM »
SSIA,
I really want to down downsize for stealth purposes.  I know in the XLR of the 4022, it has a little circuit board. Is it just for stepping down voltage? Me and a friend are thinking of removing them, and building a tiny housing for them so I can terminate it all into a Tinybox, then the r-09hr... Any experience on this?

I guess that's where my question comes in. My goal was to use it with a Tinybox. So I wonder if these mics use 9v, and the circuit steps it down. Have any of you peeps done this with no adverse affects on the mics or the recording.. I would LOVE to be able to chop these off , put on some mini xlrs, and run it into the Midbox I own, or the Tinybox, I will someday own..
opinions?

I'm personally (a) too afraid to chop my DPAs and (b) would lose the benefit of sturdy, high-quality XLR to run into my R-44 open 95% of the time.. but I am intrigued by your question, as I was thinking about getting a tinybox as well.  I figured I would just get a cable to go 2xXLR>5pinMini, although I would be getting less than ideal voltage. I've run them at 12V with my littlebox, and it's been fine..  I realize that would not solve your size issue, but I believe it will work with the Tinybox, and it won't involve doing a self mod to $3500 mics.... Jon, of course, will have better insight.

I just pulled the lemo connector from a 4023 and checked the unloaded voltage.  DVM read 17.2V

i'm confused.   why do you want to cut the xlr off?

Well, I want to stealth with these, and for size, "every little bit helps". I also have a Naiant Midbox with mini xlr in w/ phantom power. So my idea was to put on mini xlr, for size and also to make some nice cable extensions.. Then for stealthing, I want to use the Naiant "Tinybox" (with mini xlr +48v) when it comes to fruation (sp?).

So my theory was, if these step down the voltage from 48v to say, 9v. Whats to stop me from splicing on some mini xlr's and be done with it.. But if I'm gonna lose some quality, or damage the mics, it's obviously a bad idea. I'm not keen on cutting up some $2500 mics, but if done properly, it could benefit my taping........

If not, i will just make a shorty adapter form reg xlr to mini xlr so I can still do this...

4022s are already tiny...i wouldn't dream of cutting off the xlr to try to make it more "stealthy."

Mark,

You might want to read the tinybox thread on this, but I don't think it is going to provide 48v.  The reason it works with Schoeps CMR (and the reason CMR have some detractors) is the CMR don't provide full 48V and therefore, don't require it from the tinybox.  Jon has said it would be too noisy to provide a 48V source in a box that small.

On my littlebox, I have experimented with running the 4021s off of the "low" setting (24v, I think it is) and it seemed to work fine.  Thus I think I am willing to try it on the tinybox.  But you will be underpowering the mics, and lowering the headroom, AFAIK.
