Can I Record from my Denecke AD-20>lappy?
« on: January 25, 2004, 12:32:49 AM »
Have a older, large Dell laptop that I want to experiment with taping, to see if this is the direction I want to go, and was wondering how to get a signal from my Denecke AD-20 to it....
Am I right to think I need to use a pre/AD with USB out, or can I use the coax/SPDIF out on the AD-20 to my lappys mic in (mono1/8>mono1/18)?
would this pass a proper signal?
I have wavelabs 4 to record with...
Thanks for all the help.......

mic in is a negative, especially from the AD-20

Your intuition is correct if you have USB on your lappy.  Firewire could work if you have that.  You can either get a new pre/adc or get a external usb sound card like the m-audio audiophile usb

the AD-20 only has digital out, so no, it would not pass proper signal at all.

You'll need a card with digital in to use the AD-20

The two popular choice seem to be the VX Pocket ($200 if you can find the right deal).

Then again, you can pick up a UA-5 for only $50 more and get it all in one nice box.
KM 184 > V2 > R4
older recording gear: UA-5  / emagic A62 / laptop / JB3 / CSB / AD20 / Sharp MT-90 / Sony MDS-JE510
Playback: Pioneer DV-578 > Lucid DA 9624 >many funny little british boxes > Linn Isobarik PMS
