I am thinking of switching up my gearbag a little.
If I were to go Mics > Mix pre / Mp2 > R-09HR I have the following questions:
1. Would there be any issues with volume/ inputs?
2. would I have problems not using some sort of a/d and relying on the one that the R-09 has??
Thanks!!

The a>d in the R-09 is decent enough. I don't know abut the SD pre.

I've never had an issue. I ran MP-2 > NJB3, MP-2 > R-09 and now MP-2 > R-09HR. Never had problems with volume or A/D in any of these units. I use the tape out of the MP-2 (which is +6) and usually have the gain knobs somewhere around 8-9 o'clock and the R-09HR around 37. I guess if you had really unusually low sensitive mics you could use the XLR output of the MP-2 (which is +16).

And the tape out of the MixPre has even lower minimum gain (0 dB) so you should be fine with that too. I haven't had a problem with AT853's which are fairly high output.

i have run my sd mp-2 > r-09 combo a lot with a bunch of different mics (shure vp88, earthworks sr77, mbho 603a) and have been very happy with the results. the a/d in the r-09 units are very good for what they are.
