V3 without phantom???
« on: December 09, 2003, 10:57:17 PM »
ok so I have a really weird question..

first let me start with what im wanting to run
schoeps mk4> n-box > v3 > m1

my obviously since the n-box is a black box that gives power to the mk4's i cant turn on the phantom power on the v3.. so...

has anyone ran the v3 without phantom power??  if so what do I do..

my guess is (please correct me if im wrong)
i plug into the mic/line input and just dont turn on the phantom power and run the v3 same as i would if i were running mk4/cmc6 > v3.   IS THIS CORRECT OR NO..

also did it change the sound when using the v3 without phantom??

any help would be more than appreciated..
thanks

p.s. just to clear it up NO.... trading the n-box for cmc/6 is out of the question.. (i want the n-box as its great for stealth)

Correct.  And no, I couldn't hear any difference running PS-2 > V3 v. V3 with phantom.  'Course, the NBox is a pre, also, no?  So you'll get the NBox analog stage in there which may alter your sound.  Dunno for sure, though, never used one.

i know ill get a little gain.. but do you think ill get a lot of gain.. i mean i would think it would be very minimal of a sound..

also were you able to use the gain knobs same as normal with not using the phantom power on the v3??

essentually the n-box and the ps2 would be similar i would think because they both are just "black boxes" meaning neither provide any gain they just power the mics.

anyway thanks for your responce and let me know on the above

I actually tried to acquire the N-Box in the Yard Sale recently - maybe this is the one you're picking up?  I thought the N-Box provided gain (not positive if fixed or variable), but I don't know for certain.

You can definitely use all the V3s functions as normal even though the phantom is turned off.  I say go for it!

Not sure how much gain the nbox adds, but I've seen guys run m148>v3 with the v3 phantom off and the gain on the v3 set at 10.  This FOB at panic and mule, and that's about as loud as it gets...

but you have to set the -20db pad on the V3 to do that

Good call, I would've forgotten that if it was me.  Fortunately, since he's not switching gear around, he can set it once and leave it.

Oh!  And be very careful unscrewing the V3 case!  Those screws strip very easily (or perhaps I just have a crappy screwdriver and suck at unscrewing stuff).

well, i did not run the pad when i ran it and had no problems...10 db min from the v3 and 20 from the 148, min 30db gain...i always have to run that much gain with the u89's and ran a little less gain than that with the 140's...i do run a bit hot though.  no overs though.  fob at msg.

i personally think you'd be better off running a mme but then again i've never been big fan of the v3.

I've run m148>v3 and VMS5U>V3 with out setting the pad and experienced no problems what so ever.
