YAY (V3 content) :D
« on: September 01, 2004, 12:39:32 PM »
so my V3 just arrived.  it won't power up with either of the 6v batts i have.  they are fully charged.  what should i do?  i'm guessing the pin assignments for the v3 power cable are different than the ones on the 4pin on the 6v batts?  if so that would suck cause i'm horrible at soldering ...... can't even keep a steady hand to make a xlr cable ::)

dave ran on 12v's not 6v's... check the pin assignments

was dave the v3's previous owner?  If so, and it was run on 12 volt, the low voltage shut-off will need to be recalibrated as well, since I'd presume that 6 volts would be below the low voltage shut-off level for a 12 volt calibrated v3 (and the v3 wouldn't start/run)

Yeah, 6v is WAY below the 12v shutoff range. I think the 6v shutoff range is ~5.5v, so the 12v would likely be around 11. If that's the case, it's just popping the top off and twisting the variable resistor down - not tough at all. Definitely easier than soldering. :)

ok guys well this is just confusing now.......well sort of

Dave led me to believe the whole time that this was a 6v unit. i mean it says it is on the box and unit

yes, as i stated in my previous posts, the pin assigments on the  6v batteries' 4pin xlr's are wrong but they are right on the v3 power cable.  pins 2 and 3 are soldered on the power cable. pins 1 and 4 are soldered on the batteries so no matter what it's calibrated at the unit will never get juice with my current battery and battery cable configs.

so how can this in any way be a 12v V3???  the power cable is not wired for it.  then again i guess Dave could have wired his 12v's to pins 2 and 3.

either way some resoldering has to be done.  thanks for hte offer leegeddy,+T, but i think it's time i finally get this soldering stuff down.  if i can't i know i can get it done locally in St. Louis.

I never saw Dave use 6v's but I could be wrong on that... I know he carried 12v's for the tubes too. Like I said, I could be totally wrong, sorry Brian didn't mean to lead you astray!

Note -- a v3 calibrated to run @ 6 volts will run just fine on 12, it just won't show when the battery's running low, so it's entirely possible that you're good to go on that issue.

Good luck on the soldiering --

no need to apologize Tim.  if Dave used 12v, yet claimed to me it was of the 6v variety, then i just hope he recalibrated it and all i have to do is resolder the pin assignments on my 6v batts' 4pins.

not a big deal at all really, even if i have to recalibrate.  however if i do need to recalibrate and resolder why would dave tell me it was a 6v V3.  i guess it doesn't really matter though

that's what he had, I;m buying a friends whole rig. 4's will be fine for me, great sounding venues out here and I'll be running up front anyway

as for Rick Moranis, I had a picture of Darth Vader and Joe W. posted this shot... it then dawned on me that I am more Rick Moranis than I am James Earl Jones ;D

no 4v's... never liked em. though the brother of the guy I'm buying these from has the 4v's if I ever wanted to try.

41's? Not necessary as we don't have any venues that sound any where near as shitty as The Pageant. I tape in good sounding small venues, the worst place is The Fillmore and I always go FOB there. No need for hypers in any other place!

no, definitely not at red rocks... subs or cards. Hypers make that phasing sound worse.. and really you're not that far away.

The Gothic sounds great too... though not as nice as The Fox. That place is easliy the best sounding indoor venue I've ever been in.

the mk41's are sweet caps, maybe next year... I need to save my money after this!

i just have to resolder my 6volt batts so i can use them with the V3. the person who made my 6v's used pins 1 and 4 instead of the standard, 2 and 3.

no big deal anymore really :)

Spaceballs is an awesome film.
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

Yeah, no doubt. I know someone that went to a wedding reception at the American recently. Said it was weird since it is kind of a dump with the lights turned up. It was a good place to see a show though.

so to anwer my own question :P

the wires for the 4pins on my batteries are wired for the top 2 pins..... pins 1 and 4 i'm guessing?  looks like this:

@     @     where "@" = the soldered pins.

the 4pin on my v3 power cable looks like this:    *       *
                                                                       @ @

I just did this two days ago. The wires are indeed on pins 2 and 3 as in your lower diagram. Check the DIY section for plus and minus designations.  I can't remember off the top of my head.

hell yeah thanks again joe!  V3 works like a charm.  the blinky lights had me mezmorized :D

decided to go balss out and push the thing as hot as possible.  lot of overs but the tape sounds nice.

what's funny is that i forgot my entire 6 volt system (batts, cable, charger) was all wired the same way. now i need to get a new 6v charger or resolder everything. hopefully the battery i have now will last through tonight.

sucks that we lost the American Theatre for that place...

Amen to that. I loved the vibe at The American Theater. Everyday I look at the venue from the SBC building a few blocks away...just waiting. patiently. The Pageant doesn't carry the same weight for me.

<grovel>I'm still looking for copies of any Black Crowes recordings from the American in STL; 07/30/92 & 07/31/92... Anyone ?</grovel>

The Mule @ The Pageant 10/21 will show them what it should sound like!
Hope to see ya down front.

no actives. have fun though.....you'll be blocking the whole time while i'm standing comfortabley in front of the board only mere feet behind you ;)

no point for fob at the pageant IMO.

there is no reason to go FOB at the pageant... you would just have to see it to know

Hey Boa,
Good to see you on the taper section - the STL factor is growing on this list.
Also good to see you last night at Crazy Bowls and Oberweis.

moke you make an excellent point!  there were several times when my m1 meters would show an over but the V3 did not.  and because each clip i had on the V3 were due to transients(loud bass or drums) you can't hear 99% them on the tapes :)

nice bit on the tas700 meters.....wonder what other recorders' meters are like.

so this thread made me plug in the v3 I got on loan.  I have 6v ecocharges as well as 12v.  the v3 is labeled 6v on the back.  it will not power up using either battery.  don't know ANYTHING about the pins etc but the xlr connecter looks the same as the one for my p1.   ???  ???  ???

are they charged ???

if so, check the pins where you plug the v3 power cord in, they may be touching :)

EDIT

I figured it out.   for some reason when I plug the  cabel into  the v3 and srew it in tight it won't do anything.  well I unscrewed it and wigled it around and saw lights  ;D  but it will only power on and stay on while holding the cabel in kind of crooked.  so I asume (hope) it's the cabel and not the connection on the v3.

On your power cable, at the V3 end is a switchcraft connector. Look inside the end of that connector, and you will see that the little male pin is split. You will likely need to carefully pry the contact apart slightly to reestablish solid contact.

looked inside the end and don't really see a male pin.  kind of looks hollow.   ???

yep. Bean is right,... my bad! +T Bean!

I just dug out my extra power cord, and looked, and sure as shit,.....
I haven't disconnected my V3 since I bought it for this very reason (the pins). I rack mounted with everything plugged in about a year and a half ago, and haven't looked at it since then.

my apologies.

exactly what i did mok3, and i would never go back :)

rack mount that bitch and never look back ;)

well it's coming on a lot easier.  however when I screw it all the way in so it's tight it won't come on or stay on.  I'll keep working on it.  thanks again guys.  +t tomorrow  ;)

nevermind.  I got it!  leaving the cabel on for good now.
