Title: Superclamp Q
Post by: blu666z on January 17, 2004, 03:10:41 PM
Ordered a SuperClamp and extension arm from B+H.  Not real happy with the extension arm.  Becasue of the hex end on the arm, when you clamp it to a horizontal rail, there is no way to have the stud pointing straight up.  Its about 20* off.  Am I missing something or do you just have to compensate for the angle with your shockmount?

there should have been a small 1/4 to 1/4" stud that came with the clamp, there should be a small 1/4" next to where the extension arm goes in, just played around with mine and you can find an application for either horizontal or vertical clamping using the extension arm and 1/4 adaptor

That will work but I was hoping to hold the mics out from where I'm clamped to.  Figured out a way for it to work.  You can take the set screw, to hold the stud in, out of the extension arm.  The 1/4" stud will screw in that same hole.  Now you can have the clamp mounted on a horizontal rail and have the stud perfectly veritcal.

I just filed the hexagonal corners off the bottom of my extension arm, so that it rotates 360* in the clamp.  That way it will run at any angle you could possibly want, including perfectly vertical from a horizontal railing.

Peace.

That's a thought.  I do have a Dremel around here somewhere that I never use.

Eric, Any chance you can snap a picture and post it?

Thanks.

Guess no picture.  I'm thinking you just have to make sure you have the set screw in tight since the slide lock at the bottom won't be holding the arm in anymore.

I am just having a hard time visualizing this...may have to play around with it tonight to see if I can get the picture

Hey, guys.  Sorry, but I don't have the capabilities to post a picture right now.  Here's more of a description of the mod....

The end of the extension arm that slides into the clamp is hexagonal, as is the hole it goes into.  This is why it won't rotate perfectly vertical.  If you simply file off the corners of the hexagon, making it rounded on the end that inserts into the clamp, it will slide in and rotate completely around to whatever angle you want.  And you don't have to worry all that much about how tight the screw is to hold it in.  The standard threaded adaptor that comes with the clamp is rounded, and it still holds securely.  The slide lock will still hold it in place as long as you don't file it down too far, it'll just rotate more easily.  Just secure the screw as tightly as you normally would and it'll hold just fine.  Hope that helps.  Peace.

Eric

Oh ok.  Thanks for the clarification.  I was thinking I would have to completely wack off the end not just file it down.
