Do the aiwa or JVC MD's have on the fly level changes or are they like the sonys?

aiwa do as well. I run one for backup or rough stealth shows, recommend the aiwa f70 or f80/c80, cheap on ebay (~70), and one of the very few MD models with a backlight.

sony's can on the fly as well, they say you can't but you can trust me at least on the n707.  theres a trick to it, you have to hit record>pause>menu>record volume>manual enter, then using the track skip you can adjust.  all you have to do is hit pause, and make sure your counter is running, and you can adjust all you need from there...  good luck, if you can't figure it out, let me know..

peace

I've got a Sharp MD-MT90 that I'd be willing to part with...on the fly level changes and all. ;)

no on my sony unit once you set the volume adjustment to manual, you can change it on the fly.  it doesn't do anything to the recording as far as pausing it.  but you have to remember that when you first start it up, start up early, and go into the menu and make sure its set to manual adjustment, and when you push to un-pause make sure time is rolling, and then just hit the buttons to adjust up or down.
