Which mic should I use????
« on: December 29, 2005, 12:36:25 PM »
I'm recording an upcoming bluegrass festival in Portland, Oregon.  http://www.rivercitybluegrass.com.  Has to be stealth because of their lame taping policy.

I put out an ISO for some small mics to borrow.  I have 3 replies so far from the many generous awesome people here.  I love this place!

So which will work the best for FOB bluegrass?  I've always been an AKG guy so I'm not super familiar with these mics.  I know I'm not too wild over Schoeps but I can deal with em.

Schoeps MK-4's>VMS
Neumann KM-184's>either V3 or U5...I haven't decided
mbho 603's>either V3 or U5...I haven't decided

Opinions wanted!  :0)

I'd say the 184's>V3 as well.  The 184's are my favorite mic for bluegrass and acoustic stuff.
But, the MK4's>VMS would be easier to stealth and will produce good results as well.
How stealth do you need to go.  The 184's aren't very big, but tough to run in a hat unless you have a system.

i would think the brighter characteristics of the mbho would better suite a bluegrass festival, especially FOB, but who knows :)
Schoeps MK 4V & MK 41V ->
Schoeps 250|0 KCY's (x2) ->
Naiant +60v|Low Noise PFA's (x2) ->
DarkTrain Right Angle Stubby XLR's (x3) ->
Sound Devices MixPre-6 & MixPre-3

I say go with the MBHO's...especially if any of it's raw with no PA...the highs on the HO's will work real nice with bluegrass

If you've already got 451's and a UA5, why would you want to go with 184's and a V3??

451 is much narrower than the Neumann, it's just longer.

Seems lilke if you're really going to have to stealth it you have to go with the Schoeps or the MBHO.  I'd rule out the Neumann because it doesn't buy you anything you don't already have.  Plus the 451 will do nicely on acoustic music.

The 451's being longer is the problem.  They won't fit into a hat rig.  I went ahead and grabbed the Schoeps setup since it's my buddy's and he lives close.  But  I just got word taping will be allowed.  They will just make an announcement prior to each set saying whether taping is ok.  :0)  So I'll set up my full rig for the ok stuff and go up front and run  stealth for the not-so-friendly artists.  :0)
