Wind screens for Shure SM-58s
« on: October 11, 2020, 12:25:35 PM »
Suggestions? Got a pal that has been doing back-yard concerts during this bug and the wind was an issue this past weekend. Completely blanked on the screens for those mics. Been laid-up on disability and can't remember...

Outdoor use, Don't think the BAS Shures we commonly use will fit the 58's...

As the "ball-screen" of the SM-58 is something of a defacto standard form for vocal mics, generic foam screens which fit over the ball are common and cheap. They are single layer and not particularly thick, maybe a 1/2" or so, but will help somewhat.  Commonly available at music stores in a pack of 5, sometimes in multiple colors. I use them as windscreens on the DPA 4061 omnis I've mounted in spheres of similar size to make them slightly more directional at high frequencies, and in that application they completely suppress very strong wind.

Otherwise, try a faux fur "dead rat / dead cat" type cover.

Couldn't you unscrew the metal grille and use the BAS?

There you go, taking the grille off SM58's gives you the smaller profile of their 57's but you'll need to take extra care with the bare dynamic element.

Keeping political views out here, BAS are regularly used outdoors on the presidential POTUS Shure SM57's.  After the embarassing talking hat incident from the first photo below (someone forgot the apple box) they switched from triple mount to dual mount.  Shock donuts were incorporated into the dual mount after W's occasional habit of pounding on the podium.  Then switched to the silly goosestep gooseneck in the last photo for current admin and likely looking to return the slicker dual VIP55SM mount for next admin.

this is the SM57 with the A81WS foam screen
i can't emphasize how amazing this combo is for vocals

the A81 makes the SM57 sound like the SM7B, and that's not hyperbole

you'll love it
it's a way of life
