Topic: Mirage OM7.....

Anybody familiar with these?

I would like to start building a nice playback system. There is a pair of the Mirage OM7's at a local pawn shop for $900 which I know I could get down.

I know pawn shops aren't the best place to get speakers, but....

Anyway, I feel like I know the Mirage name. Just looking for some feedback.

I'm not familiar with Mirage, but I've owned a set of Sound Lab Dynastats for 10 years.  They are electrostats with a dedicated 10" sealed sub for each panel.  These types of speakers need at least 3' of space from walls (4' would be better).  I wouldn't recommend anything less than 100 wpc.  I power the Dynastats with a set of 110w tube monoblocks.  60-75w just doesn't cut it.  I feel like they'd do best with about 250 wpc.

Another thing to consider is the possiblity of defects.  Most people spending that kind of money on speakers ($2000 msrp) don't usually unload them at a pawn shop.  Mylar backing is commonly used in electrostats and can become loose or torn over time.  It creates small buzzes in the panel at certain frequencies.  I've heard it come loose in my own speakers.  Electrostatic hybrids are expensive to have repaired and also expensive to ship because of their size and weight.

I would not buy these from a pawn shop.
