Title: Will This Work? Building a cable to patch from board.
Post by: Neilyboy on September 08, 2009, 01:12:21 PM: I have not worked with RCA ends that much but this should work correct? recently I have run into having nothing but a single mono xlr feed from the board. This is fine as I had been running an xlr to rca adapter then rca to 3.5 to my recorder. I just wanted to build a simple cable to record that single source to both channels (so I do not have to mix it in post).

Will this drawing I came up with work?

do not judge me on my drawing abilities hahaha...

just run both of the tip and ring to the post of the rca adapter then sleeve to sleeve??

or is there a better way of doing this..

btw Robb.. I was actually going to build this with some of that orange silver clad cable as it looks pretty sexy haha..

Since you are already making a cable, why not just make it XLR to 1/8 "?
You connect XLR pin 2 to 1/8" tip and ring. Then pin XLR pin 1 to sleeve. Pin 3 no connection.

If I am doing anything to the audio to harm it in any way then ill just stick with a single chan recording and edit in post but if I can get away with having a cable that will give me both L+R on the spot then ill go with it. Does not hurt to have one extra cable in the gear bag from time to time.

Post by: Todd R on September 24, 2009, 10:56:40 AM: The cable wiring you have is right and should work fine without any audio disadvantages.

However, if all you can get is a mono board feed and you have a 2ch recorder, you might record a mono board in one channel and throw up a single mic for the other channel. That way you can just copy the board onto both channels in post if you want, or it also gives you the option of mixing in some of your ambient mic with the board and then copying both the resulting "matrix" to both channels. It will still be mono of course, but you can use the mic to round out what could be a pretty dry board mix.

So for me the dual mono mix is just fine. I built the cable the other night it looks pretty sexy with my bright green tech-flex haha.
