Title: New Toy!
Post by: carlbeck on October 01, 2007, 02:26:59 PM
Got a new toy in the mail today! Picked up a Cary SLI-80 Integrated Amp for a great price last week & it finally arrived today. I have been enjoying the sound since I turned it on, the amp offers Triode & Ultra Linear mode but I can't decide which I like better. Triode is 50 wpc while UL is 80 wpc. I am leaning towards UL at the moment but that can change depending on source material. It's a very nice amp but I fell in love with another McIntosh I had in my system last week for less money, if I hadn't presold the Mac before I got it I would have never have changed it out. Anyway, back to the Cary, I needed some tubes back in my system. Tubes are like vinyl to me, they just sound "RIGHT" it's what music should sound like IMO. So here are some pics of the new amp, I probably should have wiped all the dust off before I snapped pics but those tubes have been glowing for the past three hours & I ain't touching it until it cools off  8)

A little of everything! Actually the amp needs 6550c, 5U4, 6SN7 & 6922's. These appear to be the stock tubes from what I can tell, nothing special. A mix of Chinese & Russian tubes.

What kind of MCintosh were you using?
Also whats going on with that wall behind you?
Ripped the drywall down to run wires? Or is that acoustic treatment :P

Yep, it's ripped down drywall, the system is in my office which is downstairs in my basement, we had some flooding last year right after I did all new drywall. I haven't bothered doing it again b/c you know it will flood as soon as I do it over! Eventually I will move the system back up into the music room when I find the time to finish it  ;D

yea no doubt. The minute the last bit of mud dries, here comes the next flood.
My friend had the same deal go down but with new carpeting.
Put the new carpet in and in came the rain, saved a lot of it and put it back down to have round 2 come through 2 months later.

i'm not a huge Mac fan, but that amp (the 2505) w/the Modwright tube premap ahead of it was very, very involving, lush, colorful..., just exactly perfect.

good luck w/that Cary.  I know it'll be out the door as fast as it came
