Topic: Powering audix 1280!

Hi!

What is the smallest/most portable 48v unit I can put between 2x Audix 1280 mics and an edirol R09HR that will power the mics for atleast 3 hours?

or sell the R09hr and buy something like a PMD-661 or Fostex FR-2LE.  both decks are bigger than the R09hr, but both decks provide phantom power directly, so you'll only be dealing with one box.  compare the size of the r09hr + phantom power to the size of one of these decks, and it's a much closer comparison.  Add to the fact that you don't have to deal with another box and another set of cables, and I think the the single box that provides phantom comes out on top.

The Audix mic body takes the 48v and regulates it down to 9v to power the capsule. If you eliminate the body with the active cables, the you just use a 9v batt. box, or PIP if available, and it is much more efficient in terms of power consumption. Plus this is a very small, lightweight mic setup. Add another 120.00 for another set of caps, and you have the choice of using the original body PLUS the caps with the active cables, or interchanging both. Lots of flexibility there.

Chris Church's solution looks like a great way to run the mics in a hat or something like that.  If that's the only way you plan to run them, go for it!  If you can afford his cable as an extra, go for it!

But...if you plan to open tape with them as well I think it's worth keeping your options open by using a phantom power source and keeping the bodies in the equation, so you can use long cable runs.  The Audixes are great at disappearing when you clamp them to a post or railing or a balcony, you can really make some venue owners happy by keeping the mics all but invisible (but still in the sweetspot) and keeping all your gear safely off to the side.

Also keep in mind that the R09HR doesn't provide anywhere near 9V of plug in power, and in fact all the miniplug input recorders I'm aware of provide 5V or less.  So you'd need a battery box or preamp to use Chris' cables.
