Anyone know the pin assignment for a KCY cable???
-
Seemingly harmless questions like that can often result in great liquidation of your bank account. ;D
Look at page 18 here... while not perfect, it gives you a pretty good idea what's going on.
http://www.schoeps.de/documents/Schoeps_Manual_VMS5_E.pdf

Your spot on Joe!! Thinking about my next set of mics, thanks for the link
-
I believe you can find it in the sonosax docs for the lemo sax. Go and DL the manual for the Sonsosax.

I looked at that. I think that explains a L/R set of 3 pin plugs, and then says "we can also supply something to plug a KCY into".

Thanks again for the link Joe!! Anyone know the Pin1 assignment for the KCY cable??
-
Pin assignment in terms of color:
1-GND
2-White
3-Yellow
4-Brown
5-Green
Hope this helps

So the polarization and powering leads are shared across both caps? I only see 1 +60v (58 in the diagram) wire, so either I've read it wrong or it's sending polarizing voltage down just one wire for 2 caps to share.
Which brings my my actual question; what's the box at the split do? I'm assuming that it does something other then just connect the 2 cap wires in a stress resistant manner, as schoeps says that usage of the aki cables to go from the bodies to the binder plug evidently causes the operation to mimic the +5db bodies. Otherwise if the box didn't do anything special what would prevent someone from taking KC5 cables, splitting them, puting lemos connecting them, and creating their own extendable KC5s(ala this (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=84582.msg1203118#msg1203118)), and then using the pin-out from the VMS for an adaptor cable with 2 lemos (using the 4-pin CMC pin-out) on one end and a 5-pin binder (with shared polarization/powering) on the other, thus creating a set of (bastardized) kcy and kc5 cables in a single set without having to buy the aki cables?
-
The junction box does nothing more than merge two shields to one and, in reverse, distribute the polarization voltage two two MK connectors. I've no idea why the AKI cables would add +5dB, but it's definitely possible to bastardize a single pair of KC5 cables as described. Freelunch (aka itgoesto11) has been thinking about doing this for some time.

Yeah, it's the change in sensitivity that throws me off.
I guess if I was considering it, I'd call Vark and have a casual chat, but I suspect someone will beat me to it well before I make my way around to running schoeps.

If you ordered the cable, what cap's are ya thinking about? Already have some (own or can borrow)?

Oh yeah, and I forgot to say this, but I freakin' LOVE my KCY 250/5 cable. It is SOOOO nice and durable and easy to coil/store when not in use :) I know it was a whopping $880.00 and seems a bit overkill, but thats money I'm saving on not having to buy bodies+kc5's :) So if you think of it that way, youre actually SAVING MONEY :P ;D 8) :)

I am very happy w/ how they sounded at moedown :)

My initial buy-in was around 2001-2002. Think I paid ~$2000 or so for 2x mk4/41>cmc6 from a WSP taper in NYC who wanted out of the game. Met him on the NJ Turnpike and changed cash into Schoepsy goodness.

Open: mk4/41/4v>kc5>cmc6>722
Still have AKG 480's w/ cards and hypers. Semi-retired.
Sometimes I'll throw a V3 in there, but overall, I like the pres in the 722 and it's so much easier to power and lighter.
Low-pro: mk4/41/4v>nbox>M10

Oh, and a pair of MC-012's w/ cards, hypers, omnis for taping in the rain.

Thats awesome. I plan on getting a single mk8 and a pair of mk22s and I'll be set for any situation :)
So was wondering, why do you own both the 4s and 4Vs? I know the 4v has that slight HF boost, and was wondering which capsule you liked better and used most often ???

Haven't had a chance to run the 4v's yet. I'll be using them mainly for the hat rig. I prefer the sound of the 4v's in a hat. I think they compensate for the fact that they are in a hat.
And the 4v's are a cinch to run in a hat. I've got a DIN Kwonbar and it fits perfectly in the hat.

I've always wondered how the 21H caps sound. If I was getting subcards, I'd consider those, but I'd also do 4Vs and standard mk41s (because the bass roll off is more linear) so I guess thats my value system.

I could sware there are some 90's phish tapes that 21H's where used or at least 21H/8 ms

Is it possible to make KCY extensions (like the KS 10 I) (assuming you have the extendable KCY 250/0 Ig) using the following parts?
http://www.binder-usa.com/psearch_detail.php?pid=5969
http://www.performanceaudio.com/buy/Mogami/W2930/5623
I have a kcy coming, and I'l love to have a few extensions at different lengths, i.e. 5', 15' and 30' depending on the situation. (like those times when you are able to score a front row balcony seat- but its all the way to the right...)
But the prices of the Schoeps cables, given the cost of the raw materials, seems (as usual) to be really high.
If so, anyone want to make me a few?

I actually just got a order to make a kcy extension(a first), i will have the binder parts friday and post the results/pics shortly after and since the binders are a 5 pin connection any good mini star quad should fit the bill(1 ground and 4 leads)

Yeah, that's tough. That's why I love running full bodies. I quit running actives in open situations years ago. Easy cheap cabling, and balanced output with almost no worries about interference.
Even if you had the active cables, running them by all those people with their cellphones, texting away.... Hmm..

Yes it is possible. You should be able to use a couple of different types of cable as well (schoeps 4 lead, canare star quad, mogami, etc) I use similar cable to make tube mic cables. If you want the black binders I think you have to buy them from Schoeps at 2x the binder-usa cost (binder only sells binder connectors with metal sleeves (not painted black)).
-

Any idea on Price?
and
I suppose there is an easy enough way to test this, but how close to a kcy does a cell phone have to be to cause audible problems? Schoeps suggests a 20 meter maximum length for these kinds of cables...
-
The cables are shielded so this should help with Cell phone interference but since they are not balanced this goes against longer cable runs.
BTW - You can order a KS cable of any length from Schoeps directly it's just a custom order.
For a non-Schoeps cable, the binder ends are about $10 (from binder-usa.com) a piece and the cable is about $1-$2 (from markertek.com, or full compass) per foot if you wanted to make it yourself.

I know I could have gone the Vark route, but I'm VERY HAPPY overall purchasing the "real deal" KCY, and it was DEF worth the 4 week wait :) Just makes me feel better/safer if something goes wrong with it or I want to resell(doubtful) ;)
I have been thinking of getting a 5 meter KS extension so I have 30ft of cable to play with for when I want my gear somewhere far from my mics :)
-
I ordered the 20' extension that Robb refered to for that very reason.

I got my 20' KCY extension cable from Darktrain today!! Did some home testing and it works and looks great. It is super light wieght, small, and gives me about 36' of cable with my KCY and the extension.

Anybody have a wiring diagram for the junction box?
-
I'm curious too!! I was wondering if one of our resident cable builders (Ted/Rob) could build a KCY. I wouldn't mind having one built with thinner cable like Belden 1804a or AT starquad. Seems like the Colettes would be the only thing to order from Scheops.

That's exactly what Nick does for nbox cables. IIRC, it's about $550 in parts for the Schoeps MK Connectors.
Assembly, however, is not for the faint of heart and I would be reluctant to say that Ted or Rob would want to take on this responsibility. I know that Freelunch has assembled a collette before and from what I understand, each connector requires at least 15 very delicate solder joints. There is a reason you pay a professional, authorized retailer like Vark to do this work.
I think Vark is still the way to go if you want something other than stock Schoeps cable, but I am not entirely impressed with their larger junction box. The stock one is much smaller and looks significantly better, imo.
-
Yeh, I don't know about assembling a collette but as far as extension cables go, thats pretty straight forward
-
I've never made a KCY extension, but I'm with Robb on this. IMO.... if wiring up the collettes was fairly simple, I think that more folks around here would be doin it. I think that is why Nick's knowledge is priceless. He wires the collettes, correct? I know that you can purchase the collettes with cable attached, but I "think" that Nick does the work..... maybe??
Just a thought out loud..... maybe a pair of "wired" collettes could be ordered, and then "spliced" together via a junction box??
Delicate work with expensive parts + Not much knowledge with the parts = A potentially scary lesson learned.
-
Building a KCY from a pair if KC5's is very straight forward - I almost made a set but sold my extra set of KC5's. I actually had Redding get together the parts and I believe it was about $250 in parts from Schoeps in addition to the KC5's - to make a a KCY and AKI.
This is using the Schoeps boards, WIMA Caps, the junction boxes, Schoeps provided Binders, and 4 conductor Schoeps cabling.

Wow... that's actually a pretty good idea! I didn't even know that Schoeps will sell the junction boxes and wonder why Vark uses their own.

yeah, I thought about the KC5 route myself and just splitting them and doing a 2xLemo>binder adaptor cable to do the split. The unknown to me is the same as mentioned earlier, what's the box do if other then split the cables out into 2 separate entities.
As for why Vark uses their own, maybe it's a cost savings.

Box has a single WIMA capacitor (6.8pF/63V or something like that - probably between GND and +60V) in it on a Schoeps PCB and strain relief for the cables. I have no idea on the AKI - haven't opened mine yet.
I do not know the schematics of the KCY Colette's though - but I would think it's the same as the KC5's. I don't know the AKI's either but it may lack the attenuation circuits (or at least they may be different) found in the KC5's as when you run KCY/AKI it's +5db versus KC5 or no actives.
-
Yes, but arent there electronics in the cabling that make them "actives" ??? Meaning you cant use just any old cable?
-
The "active" electronics are contained within the MK Connector housing. Their purpose is to convert the impedance of the signal coming out of the microphone capsule. With this impedance converting circuitry, the signal that high impedance audio signal could travel w/o degradation is measured in mere feet. By converting it to low impedance, it can travel hundreds of feet without issue.
The cable itself is just your standard 4-conductor shielded cable.

The schoeps active cable is *extremely* well shielded. It is custom made for this specific application, which of course is unbalanced. It is actually 3 conductor.
1804 has below average shield coverage.
So... nope, definitely not your standard 4-conductor shielded cable.

I just completed my customer cable collection:
Hacked KC5 cables, KCY and KCY to KC5 cable

ok so ya'll wanted to see the inside of the Vark junction box and it doesn't look like it has a pcb or capacitor. it is just wires soldered to wires.

Nice! Did Vark make all of those?
So what's goin on... from left > right??
Is that two pairs of hacked KC5's? One with a binder, one with mini xlr's?
Can you run both pairs of those cables > bodies?
My Vark KCY does not have any sort of board or anything either... straight up splitter.
-
Should the KCY junction have any electronics in it?? ???
-
Thanks Jon! Anyone have a pic of the inside of the schoeps KCY junction??

I wouldn't expect it to, although it could. The FET has to be much closer to the capsule so there is no reason to put components in the junction box.

I've seen the inside of a Schoeps junction box for a KIY 250/0 I cable which is used with the CMBI's. It had PCB and was extremely clean and well thought out. Their method for strain relief on the cable insulation is grooves in the plastic that apply the perfect amount of pressure.

so the KC5's have ta4 connectors wired 1' from the amplifier end. this allows me to quickly and neatly wrap the cables up at the end of the night. Since I also own a KCY cable and miss using it with the cmc6's, I had Vark make me a female binder to dual ta4 mini xlr cable for use with the hacked kc5 cables. so now I can use either the kcy or hacked kc5 cables for splits. plus when I had the kc5 cables hacked, they wired me 20' extension cables so I can get a split of 70' if I ever needed. Now to figure out if I am going to keep the CMR's as well.

I approve... 70' is sick!
keep the cmrs :)

Awesome, thanks for the rig Pr0n Louie ;D
-
So the answer then is that if you get (2 of) the connectors and 18" of cable terminated into a mini-xlr from Vark, you could essentially source the rest elsewhere without the box if you so chose to.
interesting.

So is the "board" that you refer to only a board that allows you to solder pointor doesit have a capacitor on it. I am curious to see what a stock kcy junction box looks like inside

I would expect no less from Schoeps. Is the Schoeps junction box metal, for shielding?

My Vark junction box seems to be delrin type plastic. And since it's built with Schoeps cable/parts, I would imagine that it's identical to the Schoeps KCY..... but maybe not??... And the strain relief is pretty perfect on the Vark as well IMO.

I have opened a Schoeps KCY before and it has a board and a single WIMA Capacitor is soldered onto the board.
If I can find the pics I took I will post them
The box that Schoeps uses is VERY different to the VARK box. Schoeps uses a custom all schoeps grey plastic (lined with EMI protective paint) you can't go to mouser or digikey and order it. It is much smaller than the VARK box.
IMO there is no comparison in build quality to the VARK box - The Schoeps box is far superior.

I am very interested in seeing some pics. wonder why Vark doesn't use the capacitor or if its needed.

did you ever open you kcy?

I just found the pic - I know it's bad but it gives you an idea
The red blob is the WIMA Cap

In the end, I'm glad I shelled out the $$ for the real deal Schoeps KCY!

I'm going to snap a pic of the inside of my KCY Junction Box so you all can see the difference ;)

So did anyone contact vark audio and ask why/how they use a diff junction box ???

I'm sending my kcy vms into Vark today, i'll ask
