support mics bar for 4 mics array
« on: August 04, 2023, 10:16:04 AM »
Hello,

I plan to use 4 mics on a bar. Could be for shows taping, but more surely for acoustical location recordings.
The bar should be 65/70cm long minimum.
No money to go for DPA, Gravity, Schoeps... Sadly.

What kind of bar do you use? And are you happy with?
  • Manfrotto ? (need to buy 2 to combine mic clips and get 4 mics)
  • K&M 23560 Stereo Bar ? (cheap price, light weight, but laaarge: 85cm)
  • something else?

Thanks.

I have used SabraSom kits for this in the past, as well as the K&M and Manfrotto solutions. I am now using SmallRig 15mm rods, as used by photographers, and a variety of clamps. The rods can be purchased in a variety of lengths (I use 12" and 18") and combined to suit the need.  Easy to pack and light weight, but incredibly strong. They hold a pair of very heavy Rode NTR and a stereo pair of omnis with ease.

There are a bunch of threads covering this at TS already. Best not to have yet another. Here is the most recent one which includes the Small Rig option Ronmac mentions above, along with a few others- https://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=202650.0

Thanks. I'll give it a look. So far, I don't understand how to combine the 2 30cm rods into a rock solid one. One good point could be the lightweight and size.

The rods are threaded, so you can join them using connectors like the ones shown in this kit: https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-rod-pack-6-pcs-1659.html

Hope that helps. I use the 9.Solutions 16mm rod system myself

Then please post your question in the most recent existing one.  It then pops to the top of the list.  Keeps the relevant information consolidated and much easier to find for others.

A friendly reminder for next time.  Good housekeeping.  We all contribute to keeping this place useful and manageable
