hey all...
i've got to come up w/a 5v DC source...and i have a few days to do it.
I've got a 6v SLA I can use. can someone point out the radioshack diodes i'll need to wire up on the + cable to "step down" to 5v?
any other ideas?
this is a temp solution, so I dont want to buy 4 $10 NiMH D cells to make a 4.8v sled.
LMK..i've got to come up w/something by Friday.

in some of the jb3 threads they have info on converting down with a radio shack cig plug and adapatips
however unless your RS has the adapatip > female cig plug i don't think you can do it without cutting wires up

Most retail VRs require at least +2 volts to get you down to the right voltage. With your limited time frame i'd suggest a 12v or 9v battery w/ a cig adapter. May be cheaper making a sled w/ some alkalines if it is for a 1 time deal.
to go 6 > 5 you would need a LDO regulator which only reqires +1v
or try 4aa NiMHs in a sled w/ a couple of sets. Probably can be had a 1 trip to office depot for the batteries and then RS for the sled. If you got a Fry's near by that may be even cheaper.

but wont an alkaline sled of 4 cells be 6v ?

Yes, but niMH are 1.2v each.

i've got shitloads of NiMH cells, but my charger is kaput, unfortantely. I just dont trust them.
Im just about out of time, so i'll probably have to rely on alkalines. energizer e2 to the rescue!

I think you'll want to run down alkaline AA batteries a bit before you use them. I think a new set of AA alkalines will be ~1.57 volts each, times 4 = 6.28 volts.

well, it works fine w/any new battery ...internaly.
but I wonder about a sled of alkalines. that would certaily be easy to come up with..and cheap. I'm going to talk to Doug today. Maybe the wallwart outputs 6v. who knows. but I think he would.
after all...4 internals is going to be 6v. maybe its operating range is 4-6v, or maybe its stepping the voltage down internaly.
one thing about this deck that sort of sucks...the battery gauge only has two segments. so its either "full" or 1/2. and you have no idea how long that is from there.

Get a >7V battery (12V SLA, 9.6V NiMH pack, etc) and solder a LM7805 voltage regulator inline with the wire you feed your equipment. This will give rock solid, no noise, exactly 5V no matter the input voltage as your battery voltage goes down. It's literally 3 solder connections, +V in, +5V out, and a common ground. $2 at any RadioShack.

Nick, I'm going to have to do the same thing pretty soon myself ;)
I e-mailed Doug and he said he uses INA4002 diodes in series to lower voltage.
Each diode should bleed off approx. .6v DC. I've found that the results vary a bit per diode, but (2) INA4002's should do it.
Put them on the positive side of the cable. I've been able to build them into the 4 PIN XLR housing if it's only 1 or two.

just thought I would mention
the 7805 is only rated at 1amp , so It may or may not work for ya .
