Alternative To Alkalines For A MV-100?
« on: August 28, 2004, 10:39:55 PM »
Greetings All,

I picked up a Beyerdynamic MV-100 about a year back & I do love the
thing. I just hate how it chews up & spits out 9V's though. I figured
I'd turn to the pros for some guidance on alternative power options.

In the research I've done I've found the following:

The best "quick fix" option would be to use lithium batteries. My
curiosity on this one is what to truly expect in way of how long
they'd power it (using the phantom power). I've come across
radically different estimations online (from as low as 6-7 hours all
the way up to 25...). The most realistic looking versions seemed
to average out `round 14+ hours. Can anyone shed some more
light from their own experience?

My preferred option would be a battery pack. Finding a dealer
who carries one has been impossible though. It seems there's
powering options for every P/A out there except this one! I'm
not completely confident in my abilities to build one, so buying
would be the way I'd rather fly. Does anyone know of a vendor
that may be of assistance &/or site member who could build one?
I'd need the full set-up - 2x12V, charger & cable/plug for the
MV-100.

Any light y'all can shed on the above will GREATLY appreciated
& I thank you in advance for the informational hookup!

Ernie

what is the input voltage for the thing, do you happen to know the current draw?

Re: Input voltage. The DC in plug on the side lists a 24V/80mA
requirement. It's true draw I don't know, but consider it is
powered by 2 x 9V alkalines. No manual - good question...

Appreciate the responses, please LMK if y'all can be of further
assistance in this quest o' mine.

Thanx,
Ernie

from my mv100 experience...
times are estimated from new battery state until i see the "Low Battery" light comes on.

internal (2 9V):

-duracell alkaline: 5hrs
-energizer lithium: 13hrs

external DC plug:

-two 12v 7.5AH SLA in series (24v): few 100 hours. i don't have a definite running time, but let's say i only charge my batteries twice a YEAR!!

phantom on, 20dB gain on the mv100.

hope this helps,
marc

Because the current draw is so low you could look at battery packs made from small cells.
e.g. these 2 in series would probably give you 15+ hours of recording http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=907
If you want something smaller you could put a pack together with AAA batteries
KM 184 > V2 > R4
older recording gear: UA-5  / emagic A62 / laptop / JB3 / CSB / AD20 / Sharp MT-90 / Sony MDS-JE510
Playback: Pioneer DV-578 > Lucid DA 9624 >many funny little british boxes > Linn Isobarik PMS
