Burr Brown ADC-DAC capable of 24 bit audio at 96KHz
a separate PLL to generate the sample rate clock
S/PDIF (output yes, input- TBD)
LINE-IN for recording (requires an external mic pre-amp)

That site seems to have some conflicting information.  It lists all the audio qualities, such as the Burr Brown ADC-DAC, but also says this:

it's not a replacement for a professional digital recording device, there are already a large number of products that serve this market well:

Odd.  Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Regardless of what features the Neuros III ends-up having, its nice to see a company take their time to "work out the bugs" a little bit and push back the release date a few times to "get it right" unlike some other companies who just want to get the product on the store shelves.

Slashdot is running an article on this today.  They neglected to link the neuros wiki and it appears there are no audio geeks who post over there (most of the comments are useless banter about ogg).

They are used in the Squeezebox devices, and too many other devices to name. It is a very decent chip.

i liked your comments about it on /. professor.    i know a couple other ts'ers are slashdot readers but, by and large the bulk of the posters over there have no frickin clue.

i don't have any direct experience with burr-brown chips but if i remember correctly, many of the a/ds we all use use them.

Uh, thanks.  It was a shoot from the hip post to try and start a little informed discussion over there.  I don't read or post to threads much anymore these days over at /.; most of the posts are useless (one reason why TS is a site I check regularly, so much informed discussion).

I've managed to hold of on the microtrack for now.  The Neuros may be the way for me to go (sort of a consumer grade 722).

I don't see why not.  But considering no right mind stepped up to the plate to deliver artifact-free analog-in on the Neuros II, I wouldn't count on it happening.  And that's nothing specific to the Neuros devices - I wouldn't count on anything we want happening in the open source community, unless specifically a taper makes it happen.

good point about needing a taper to get this done the right way.

what I need to do is step away from the boards for a few months so we can get all these new recorders sqaured away. it seems like everytime I come here I get the urge to pick up something new!

I think they are erroneous in suggesting that there are a large number of products. 3 or four does not a large number make.
Lack of s/pdif iput a brick does make.

This could actually be pretty sweet.  If their MSRP is $ 330 (20gb)/ $ 380 (40gb) actual selling price should be cheaper.  If it got to around $200 retail, had s/pdif in, supports flac and 24/96, this could be a sweet storage device!

Interesting details and I love the wiki board they are publishing.  Seems like we really are at the front door of a new age in recording gear. 

All I want is a reliable 24/96 RECORDER with a SPDIF RCA input..  Don't need pre-amps, mic-in's, adc's or anything fancy.
