AKG 414B XLS...now that ive bought one...
« on: September 29, 2009, 09:59:26 AM »
just dropped some $$ for an AKG 414B XLS for multi track fun...i have prob the most naive query known to man...which end is the 'front' of it?  you know..where i aim it towards the sound source (card, hyper, sub card setting)?

and edit to add:
how strong is the supplied mic mount?  stable enough to be ran upside down if needed?

The side of the microphone that has the polar pattern switches is the front of the microphone.

I ran my AKG 414's upside down in the supplied shock mounts all the time without any problems.

Same here.  Just make sure you secure them well with the locking ring.

I even used the stock non shock mount clips for Blumlein
a couple times without worries when I owned a pair of 414s

I ran that way XY last night.

And yes, the AKG logo is on the "front".

Congrats on the addition.  One cool thing about running LDs in X/Y though is once you get the top mic in position, as long as you put the two mics as close together as possible, even if the top one comes loose the lower mic will usually support it and keep it from falling.  Also, wrap the top cable to provide added support in case something does come loose.
