I just aquired a MX-100, so im beginning to ponder a Nak 3 mic mix. If i decide to do so, i'll have to find something to do with my AD-20.
Would i be better off selling my AD-20 and going for an A/D without a preamp? I was eyeing the ADC-20 in particular.
Or, would i better off sticking with my AD-20 as my A/D?
Unfortunatly i cant find any samples to judge with.
Thanks!

well the AD-20 isn't the greatest pre but it's better than nothing!
or is you have the money get a new pre to go with the ADC-20
-
I have the pre (MX-100).
Wondering if i'd be better off with an AD-20 (which i currently have) or an ADC-20 (which i would sell the AD-20 to buy) for the A/D into my JB3.
I guess i should also pose the question, which is the better pre? The MX-100 or AD-20?
-
Well with the AD20 you cannot bypass the pre. I would opt for the ADC-20 or a SBM1 in this situation. Unless you can spend more.

i used the ad-20 for about 9 months and i think its underrated, the sound is phenomenal for the price, ive also used the adc-20 and i cant say i like it too much, way to bright, almost no base and thats with a transfer pre(mp-2), i'd shy away for the graham patten boxes, they just dont do it, true, they are cheap, but way to bright and harsh, hope this helps

Yes in this case though he would already be running throught the MX-100 for his pre. He has no need for a pre which the ad20 has and cannot bypass.

I know you just picked up the MX-100 and this doesn't directly address your question, but...have you considered a digi-modded UA-5?
You'd have:
[1] a pretty good pre
[2] a nice ADC
[3] the option for future pre upgrades if you buy from the Oade bros
[4] the option to run 3-mic mixes
[5] the ability to go 24-bit when you're ready
[6] capability to output optical to a JB3 if and when your DAT croaks
Blah blah blah. Just a thought.
All that said, I personally like the sound of the AD-20 better than the ADC-20. I, too, find the ADC-20 bright and harsh. But, as already mentioned, the AD20 is a problem because you'd effectively be running two pres: MX-100 and AD20.
If you already own the AD-20, I'd pick up a pair of attenuators and give it a go. If you don't like it, the attenuators are cheap and yo ucan always sell 'em with the AD20.
But if it was me, I'd sell the MX-100 and AD-20 and pick up a digi-modded UA5 from the Oades. :) Then again, I'm a big UA5 fluffer around here, so...FWIW.

whoops didnt know you had a mx100, id agree with brian here, both of those pres stated above dont touch the ua-5, id go with that route
