Oade Pre questions
« on: October 24, 2003, 07:26:09 AM »
The sale of one in the yard sale got me thinking about these.....compared to most gear I don't know much about them other than that most people agree they sound really great and they look like something they try to find first after an airplane crashes. :P

Does Oade still make these?  There are 2 models I believe...the 148 and the 248  (maybe a 118 also?).  Do the two models compare to what Oade does to the ua-5...meaning one as a "presance" and one as being "warm"?  If they still make them how much are they and if not how much were they when they did make them?

It just seems kinda strange that for a piece of gear that always seems to get rave reviews I see very little discussion about them.

Thanks!

I've never run an Oade pre, so all this is hearsay and indirect observation from this and the Oade board...

I believe the only Oade pre still made is the M148, and it's produced in very low numbers from what I can tell.  The M118 was the precursor to the M148.  They run around $1,300.  See the Oade Bros preamp page.

Here's a post from the Oade board describing the sonic differences of the M148 and M248.  Search the Oade Bros forums for potentially more details on any of these units.

As for discussion about gear, I chalk it up to most discussion originating from people asking about gear they want to buy.  But since the Oade pres are such low production, generally held onto by the owners, and often sold direct to friends in-the-know, there isn't much public discussion.

Thanks Brian....I guess it just seems odd that a pre that is supposed to as good as everyone says would be more sought after.  I realize Oade makes very few of these I would just guess more folks would be on the waiting list for one.

Thanks again just curious about the black box.

well, there is a waiting list for the 148...last i heard it was in the 3 to 6 month range from oade.

also the 148 is fixed gain.  typically 20db, but i think you can get different varieties.  the 248 is variable gain and has a HPF maybe?

they're expensive, they sell used for almost as much as they go for new...

also Skalinder is right, those boxes are generally kept "in the family" when they are sold.

They are incredible pieces of gear and most people don't ever let theirs go

You can get different fixed gains on the m148...I think in 5 dbs increments....Doug has said that, in his opinion, the 20db maximizes the performance of the unit. I was looking into a little less gain to run w/JK box.  But after Doug said that, I went with 20dbs...and am completely satisfied!

Just an FYI, and I don't know if I was an exception or not.... I ordered my M148 just before Summer and Doug said I was third on his current list. I got it in just about 10 weeks.
