Title: Help!! 12v V2 not running on 6v?
Post by: greenone on April 23, 2004, 02:07:32 PM
I knew I should have checked this before now! :censored: :banging head:

Got a show tonight and I'm running my system on 6v for the first time. I run V2>ADC-20>D8; the V2 is a 12v version but I thought it could run on 6v without any modifications or calibrations. I'm using BP-50's and I know they and the cables are good because they power the ADC-20 just fine. But the V2's lights flicker when I first switch it on and then shut off immediately and show no signal. And of course, my 12v cable is gone...gah.

Got about 4 hours 'till I have to leave for the show, so quick help is MUCH appreciated!

i thought i read something in another thread about how 12 volt power chords' pins are assigned differently than 6v power chords. hate to say this but you might be out of luck. hopefully somebody has a solution for you +t

i ran into the same problem when i borrowed a 6v v2 to do some recordings in my basement and tried to use a 12v power chord.(the light flicker and everythng you described.)

oh and dave i got your pm. thanks man! no rush just needed the extra 12v for summer festival season.

Thanks Brian...I actually have a 6v power cord - bought it from Steve Szaks a week back once I found out the pin assignments were different between 6v and 12v cables. It's a great cable because I can power the V2 and the D8 from the same outlet, leaving the other one free for the ADC-20 cord. But if I can't get the V2 running, no dice. :(

yeah i just figured your problem was like the converse of the problem i had.

you are trying to use a 12v V2 witha  6v power chord which = apparant problem.

I tried to use a 6v V2 with a 12v power chord which = apparant problem.

Anybody else have any ideas?

Ah shit...now I understand what you're saying...I need to resolder the pins on the other end of the power cable or on the V2, right?

Not that I know how to solder or have the supplies...anyone near Boston available this weekend? Shit.

well personally i wouldn't go resoldering stuff on the V2 as that is the valuable piece of gear. you could probably resolder the power chord to get it to work, but like you, i don't have a clue how to go about doing that. sory to hear about this Dave hope you get it worked out in time!

except it sounds to me like you have some other problem, because you said the lights flickered and then went out.  nothing should have come on if the pin assignments are wrong.  if the power cable is 6v and you have a 6v battery, the issue should be that the unit needs to be recalibrated to run on 6v not a power cable issue.  i do not know how this is done, but if you call grace, they can help.

Good point Damon - I looked at the instructions on Grace's site and also downloaded the V2 manual (I have it at home but I'm at work now) and it looks like the automatic shutoff might be what's kicking in. But I know I read elsewhere on this site that you can run a 12v V2 on 6v if you don't mind the low battery light being on all the time. Hmm.

yeah, i guess it depends on how low the voltage is from your battery...don't the v2's have the same automatic shutdown as the v3?

Don't know if they're the same, but probably similar. The 12v V2 shuts down at lower than 11 volts. That's probably what's happening. Wonder if there are some jumpers I can tweak that will allow 6v for the time being? Hmph.

i thought it was:

6volt v2 can run on 12

but 12volt v2 can't run on 6.

call up grace and ask
303.443.7454   according to the site

I remember reading somewhere that grace has to change the jumpers inside the V2 to change from 12V to 6v. Then again I may have dreamed that?

i ran into the same problem trying to power my mini-me with the wrong cable and a bp-50.  The pin out config is in the archive section so you can correct the cable
