DAP1 Help Please!
« on: June 28, 2004, 01:44:48 PM »
I have a dat stuck in my DAP1, I believe I powered off before stopping the the deck while recording, the dat rolled fine the entire set but now it will not eject and when I try to do so I get a display that says "Tape" or "Hold", the drawer on the dat itself which slides up when recording to reveal the tape is still in that up position, I have tried everything but no luck, any solutions or suggestions are welcomed and appreciated, thanks, Chris

the Hold button itself was not on and is not now on, I just get that display for some reason, but the recording position itself definitely needs to be disengaged somehow, the dat and recording mechanism are stuck in the recording position even when the deck is powered off

how are you powering it?  6v SLA?  If so, try the AC adaptor.  My DAP1 took a tape hostage once, nothing would work on 6v DC power, but I plugged it into the wall and I got it to give up the tape.  Worth a try.

I am not sure what caused the recording position to disengage, in fact I have no idea, monday morning I fired it up and it was totally stuck, I went home last night and fired it up again and I heard the recording mechanism retract and the tape rolled, weird, anyway Doug Oade mailed me three ways to remove the DAP1 tape drawer cover to access and remove a stuck dat, all of which are rather involved but were engineered into the machine to solve the problem of a stuck dat, well now I can get back to cloning and transferring my stack of dats thank God

Is there any sort of internal battery / memory that held the last command? (for lack of better terminology, and never owned one).
sometimes the Mechanisms  can stay at an "indeterminate-state" which is why I said take out the batt. v I've had it where it would not turn off so one had to yank the batt.

good question about the memory, I do not know the answer but I suspect there is if the internal battery is in place and charged, or at least its power would immediately retract the recording position the moment the machine was powered on once again, this did not play into my problem since I always use an external battery or ac power, interesting question though

Thanks

Just FYI (and you probably know), if the P1 is run for 'extended periods' via AC or SLA's, it is recommended that the stock internal battery be removed.

I've never found any use for the internal battery at all. It's dead weight. However the empty compartment is very convienient for sneaking a bunch of rolled joints in the show.
