Topic: Melodyne .... anybody try this?

I picked up a demo at Sam Ash, but haven't tried it yet.

This is suppose to revolutionize pitch correction. I breaks the waveform up into different notes and lets you change the pitch with the drag of a mouse.
But lets say your play a guitar chord.... it breaks it up into each different note within the chord. This makes it seem like you can separate tracks after they've been mastered to stereo. Unbelievable.

I think it is better to play the take over until you get the part right. All these "advances" havent done much to enhance audio quality, but rather take the human element out of music, not cool in my opinion.

I definitely agree getting the take right is the way to do it.

I'm thinking about thinks other than creating music. I could see how this would have some applications with software development. Like I'm sure Guitar Hero uses something like this to convert songs to midi easily. But I could also see how you could create something like guitar hero but with a real instrument. And I'm wondering if this would allow you to actually remove an instrument from a stereo mix. For instance vocals, for karaoke applications.

I'm not a Melodyne user at all, but to be able to do this is pretty unbelieveable.

I'm all for getting the perfect take as well, but this kind of control can go a long way on a stellar performance with one or two small glitches if it really works.

I've seen this in action.  I watched a fellow go through a studio track of a singer.  It was a really good take except for a few warbled notes in one place.  Push the button: up spring the notes on the screen.  Use the mouse to shape and push them back onto pitch: presto. It was pretty impressive.  I can see it as a great tool.  I do not think it is the tool, but it is a good one.  And it will make the guy doing the mixing look really good by making the performer look really good.
