USB 2.0 question
« on: November 30, 2004, 01:21:36 PM »
I'm about to buy a internal dvd burner to use in an external case.  I have found usb 2.0 cases for cheaper than a firewire case.  Can i use a usb 2.0 case with my computer that has standard usb ports on it, untill i buy the usb 2.0 card?

yes, but be preprared for very slow speeds. You may also have under run issues as well. I'd recomend springing for a USB 2.0 card now they can be had for about $20 on places like new egg.

newegg is where i am looking for the dvd burner and the case.  I saw an option on the page for the case, to add a 5 port usb 2.0 card for $9.99.

I'd go for it now. Just saves teh headache down the road. In Theory it should work ok as USB 2.0 is backwards compatable. But with a DVD burner that is 16x (I'm asuming your getting the pioneer DVR-108) you will never get optimum speeds. You will be at 1 or 2 x. Not sure but other issues may come up with have to go backwards. If it's $10 I'd do it for sure.
