Topic: Parallels or Bootcamp?

Running Leopard 10.5.1 here and will still need XP on the odd occasion.

Obviously the biggest pro to Bootcamp is that it's embedded in Leopard now, but the con worries me a little (that your machine basically turns into a Windows box at startup...!)

Like the pros of Parallels, but the con is...yet more $$$ to shell out!

So which one do you use and why?  Looking for opinions so I can make a good decision here...

Just discovered that Parallels apparently does not support firewire.  So that's out the window.  Looks like I'm going to work on getting Bootcamp up and running...somehow.

For some weird reason (probably has to do with the networking environment), Parallels only starts up here at home. When I'm at university it just crashes and never starts

Haven't used it, but VMWare Fusion is another option.

On dual or quad computers, parallels only uses a single CPU, so in some respects it's not great. However, I do like the fact that I don't have to reboot my system to use windows and I can drag and drop things from one environment to the other.

We tried to use Parallels on my wife's MBP for a stitching application, but the USB device wasn't recognized by it's software. Parallels knew it was there, but for some reason their software couldn't read the device. I ended up putting bootcamp on it and all has been well since.

VMware's product looks very interesting, but I don't know anybody using it, so I can't comment on it. Maybe they support FW and dual/quad cores, I haven't been able to tell.

Well I went Boot Camp and I'm pretty happy so far.  Sucks having to run XP to do audio work (PT 7.3 and Cubase SX 2.2) but I guess *eventually* Digi will certify a version of PT for Leopard...

My damn Waves plugs aren't supported either (yet).  What is wrong with these companies?

My Waves plugins work fine in Leopard. Have you checked their support page?

They have been pretty good in releasing updates in fact, they released some beta versions of their AU plugins for Digital Performer recently too (a LONG time in coming)... they stopped supporting MAS plug-ins, and AU was hit & miss in DP.

My Waves plugins work fine in Leopard. Have you checked their support page?

Waves support says their plugs are NOT compatible with Leopard yet and expectations are 1-2 months.  That's the official party line, at least.  I've read that they do work, but until ProTools gets functional on Leopard I don't have an application to run them in anyway!  I have heard that PT 7.4 is working in Leopard, but I'm not ready to jump in just yet.

I'm planning to download the Waves installers for Mac today and at least have them ready to go.  Who knows?  Between today and tomorrow I might get bold and give it a go.

I just realized that you're not using the AU versions, that's probably why they claim the 1-2 month delay.
