Typical upload speeds for archive.org?
« on: January 31, 2008, 01:14:13 PM »
Trying to decide whether I should switch to Comcast DSL from AT&T, the latter says I can't get anything faster than their basic service since I'm too far from the main office. My main motivation would be to get faster u/l speeds to archive.org - right now I'm seeing averages of about 50 KB/sec, is it possible to go faster with higher DSL speeds? I think AT&T specs their basic service at around 384 for u/l (I need to speed-check my line to see if I'm actually getting that), which makes me think that the limitation is somewhere other than my DSL.

It's possible to get faster u/l speeds through DSL, just depends on your distance to the CO and the speed package available from the service provider.  An u/l spec of 384 kbps = ~50 KB/s ( 48 KB/s, actually, i.e. 384 / 8 ), so your u/l speeds are maxed out due to the u/l speed restriction as part of your current package.  I've found the packages with faster upload speeds (512, 768, and higher kbps) aren't cost effective for me, i.e. BIG price increases for minimal increases in u/l speed.

Comcast sucks. They are throttling torrents.

Outgoing has always been artificially limited on Comcast...

I can get about 65k out with Embarq DSL (and Im in the sticks!) - faster than my old comcast ever was - the down is slower - but still does everything I want. No problem streaming DivX stuff...VBR Mp3...etc...

Start with the DSL - if it doesnt cut it - move to cable...

Hell - the archive has been so horked lately - speed wont matter!
