FTP server recommendations????
« on: November 30, 2005, 01:51:31 PM »
I'm getting tired of BT sites with all the bitching.  Considering installing a FTP server on my computer.  Any suggestions?

I have a Dell, P4 3.00 GHz, XP

I'm about to go to work, so i'll check back later.

Tapers.org.  ;D

I've used and liked GuildFTP and Serv-U.  Some swear by WarFTP, but I found it's UI a bit lacking.  I think the key is not so much the specific FTP daemon used, but rather proper configuration to ensure it's reasonably secure.

I currently run GuildFTP and it runs great...

for windows, I recomend Filezilla for client and server.
for *nix, I use ProFTP server and gFTP client.
for Mac, I use the built in FTP server and RBrowser for client

all are *free*   ;D

i use yahoo small business service!

recommended from a user on ts.com:

5gig of space, 200gig of transfer, nice service/support, fast speeds, and most important ($10/month)
this comes with a domain registration and setup fees are waived.

just another option, since I wouldn't really want to open up my computer to the world (security-wise)
i know you can protect yourself, but it's easier this way.

and you can host sites, there.  but that's a no-brainer  ;D

I've been running Serv-U for 6-7 years now with excellent results.  I keep up with the updates and patches and the UI is super easy.  It also offers tons of options.

I would recommend Serv-U as well.  Super simple UI.  Happy customer of theirs since 1998.

My favorite has always been G6 FTP Server. I don't run a site too much anymore though so I haven't used it in ages.
I don't know just where I'm going

i use bulletproof ftp server...i actually think g6 is the same thing.  but i've used it for many years, very easy to setup, and works great.

can bulletproof be configured to work with a dynamic (changing) IP address in passive mode?

I used to use bulletproof but needed to manually adjust my IP address within bulletproof whenever it changed.  I now am a VERY happy Guildftp user -- Guildftp does automatically change the ip address setting to allow it to run in passive mode (behind a router) with my dynamic ip address.

i think so, i've never used the function, so i never really looked at it or into it.  from the settings menu it looks like you can set it up so if your ip changes, it'll fix it for you.

BPFTP can be set to look for changes and adjust accordingly. Of course, with dynamic IP, for incoming connections, you'll need to set up some sort of DNS alias to forward connections to the FTP server. Although I now have a static IP, I still use DynDNS

linux   - vsftp   a bit tricky, but worth it.
Windows  - Filezilla  or Guild

what he say on the DDNS, and don't forget to open (all) of your firewall(s) -  got to see it and find it from the 'Net

for windows, I recomend Filezilla for client and server.

I'm using filezilla as a client but not sure how to use it as a server.  I see the server option at the top but when I click on it nothing is highlighted and I see nothing in my settings about it.
