Title: outboard meter w/ headphone amp
Post by: mmmatt on April 08, 2004, 01:37:15 PM
This is a device that I found looking for a metering solution for ua-5>jb3
Its called the beachtek svu-2
http://beachtek.com/svu2.html
It is small, steel housing, internal 9v batt, simple calibration adjustment, it has a 10 segment meter, and a 250 mwatt headphone amp.  A typical walkman type amp, from what I understand, is 15-20 mwatt so this should be a huge improvement for a ua-5 and many other small devices.   It goes for $125 here http://www.guygraphics.com/ .
I would like to know what people think, and if anyone has used this device.

Matt

yea i picked 1 up off of ebay the other day for 69.00 ,, my model is without the headphone out.. but if im not mistaken doesnt the ua5 provide this.?   just curious why it would be necessary.. my biggest wonder is the sensitivty of this vs. the jb3 input.. being built around the output of a camcorder i wondered how it compared.. peace now ::)

I think his biggest gripe was the UA-5 headphone amp is very weak so with this device it solves 2 issues in one.   Let us know how that other model you got off of Ebay works out.

Actually the headphone output of your typical walkman/discman/minidisc walkman is 2.5-5mW these days.

I am excited about this little unit.  I unfortunately don't have years and years of taping experience, but I do have my ears and my eyes.  This will allow me to use them both.
