Title: UA-5 & batteries dead?
Post by: allan on February 04, 2011, 03:25:48 PM
So I plugged my UA-5 in and plugged in the dvd battery... nothing, figured the battery was out, plugged in the other one - same thing. plugged the UA-5 into the wall - nothing. Opened it up and didn't see anything burnt out. Anyone have any similar experiences, can anyone fix it, is it worth it, and are the batteries bricked?

If you plugged it in with reversed polarity on the battery, it does a reset, but should work again after a minute.

The UA-5 is tip negative on the DC input, which is opposite of most recording gear.

I was using the same cable I've used for around a year, wired - not plugged, so it couldn't have gotten turned around, and the batteries still seem to be dead.

A simple check if you are comfortable with taking it apart, you could check the solder connections on the bottom side of the board for the power connector.

Good idea, i opened it and checked the top when it happened, i'll take it apart maybe tomorrow and look at the bottom.

Any luck?

Have you checked the outgoing current from your batteries (and wall wart) with a multimeter?

The batteries look to be fine, havent gotten the UA-5 completely apart yet, might have time for that tonight.

got it apart, couldn't see anything that looked bad.

Assuming that the solder connections to the power connector are fine and your batteries / wall wart are all working, double check polarity.  As Chuck pointed out UA5 polarity is opposite of most gear.  If the polarity was reversed when you connected previously and it still doesn't work after correcting the polarity then it could be possible a diode opened up and would need replacing.

While you have it open, using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the posistive and negative legs of capacitors C176 and C179. If C176 measures below 800 ohms IC30 is probably bad, if C179 is measuring low the short could be any of the ic's in the unit. Thats when the troubleshooting gets fun,
