JB3 problems
« on: August 14, 2003, 06:52:29 PM »
i got my jb3 today, i fired it up. and proceeded to delete all the albums the original owner had on there... about half or 2/3s through in deleting them the screen went blank while deleting an album

i tryed powering down, nothing. so i took the batterys out, and turned it back on. the creative logo and the eax logo both flashed, then blank again, with the light on

i tryed reseting it, and still the same

i didnt delete any neccesary firmware or anything by reseting it did I?

any reccomendations or advice?

i cant access it with my pc at the moment,as included was a firewire cable, and i dont have my firewire card in yet...

and i have to have it for saturday, its a must

help please!

Not to sure.

Sounds like you have already done everything i could tell you to try without the firewire. Taking batteries out, making sure they are charged, and reseting it.
Did you delete anything besides albums?

Sorry to hear about your issues!

It sounds as if you might have the problem with the 1.30 firmware..?

While we're not experts, these guys ARE:
http://www.nomadness.net/

Go to the JB3 forums, search and post your problems.. there is a wealth of information there!

As of right now you can't get it past the startup screens correct?  Have you tried playing w/different power sources?  Plug it into the wall outlet and see if it boots?

big plus T to all of you

the nomadness.net is the greatest forums for this machine

this is what i did:
 nomadness.net FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

·  Why does the battery not last as long as specified?
·  My hard disk is X Gb, but my Nomad shows less. Why?
·  Does the Zen support or show files/folders?
·  How do I change the Startup Screen?

Answer
·  Can I use the NJB3 while jogging?
Creative Labs do not recommend you use the NJB while jogging. The impact loads sustained are presumably too much for the laptop hard disk.

·  How can I enter the rescue mode?
1. Remove the battery or press the reset button.
2. Either while reinserting the battery or after reset ensure that the stop button is held down.
3. As soon as the 'Creative' logo appears on the screen during the boot sequence, release the stop button. Immediately press and release the play button. The unit should boot to a diagnostics mode with several recovery options. Those are:
1. Clean Up (Performs a scan disk on the HDD)
2. Format All (*WARNING* ALL contents will be lost, including pre-installed content)
3. Reload OS (*WARNING* THIS IS AN ADVANCED OPTION. DO NOT choose this unless you are sure of what you are doing as you could render your player unusable. You must also have a suitable firmware file on your PC for reloading via USB)
4. Reboot

i just did a clean up, reboot, and everything is fine!!!

im fucking excited now. bot about 8 hours of taping to do tomorrow, and this was my only option!

thanks

Go ahead and upgrade to 1.32.02 (the current firmware) regardless of what you've got on there.

You'll need the original install disc to install the Creative Play Centre thing if you want to grab files from the JB3 (and don't have Notmad...which I don't).  The web downloads are upgrades only...I had that problem when I got my JB3 because my install cd was so warped the cd-rom couldn't read it!

Let me know didn't get the disc if you need the original install - I can put it up on ftp for ya.

Again, I'd have to recommend using the 1.20.06..

Go to the forums at that nomad site and search for "1.32.02" and see all the problems people have had with it.. keep in mind once you upgrade the firmware you can go back.

you mean "can NOT" go back...

What's the beef with 1.32.02?  Works fine for me, maybe I'm special...

Lee, thanks for the correct, right, you CAN NOT go back.. well, sort of.  Apparently you can fool the thing with some french firmware to try and restore it.. but why bother if you don't have to right?

What's the beef?  Just search the forums at that nomadness.net site and look at all the problems people have had with the "latest and greatest"...

Just IMHO, but no one can tell me a benefit of 1.30 over 1.20 so why risk it?

Ironic that I'd come in here to post about my JB3 problems and find this thread at the top  :-\

Unfortunately Creative Tech Support broke my JB3 on Friday morning as I was gettin ready to walk out the door to my first of two festivals on back to back weekends.  It was operating just fine, but for some reason I couldn't upgrade the firmware on it from 1.10.06 to 1.11.07 or 1.20.06 which would give me level meters.  Still I'd gladly give up level meters for a working JB3.  Well the guy tells me to enter rescue mode and remove the OS.  I guess I am an idiot for listening to him and trusting the instructions e-mailed to me.  So now with the OS removed, I still had the same problem I had to begin with: couldn't upgrade the firmware on it.  With the firmware that was on it removed, now it boots up and says "firmware problem" then goes straight to rescue mode.  So I had to pick up a pack of mini-discs :-X and head out to the festival. :(  Ran my UA-5>Optical>silver hockey puck.  Took the software and the USB cable out to the fest and the festival promoter was nice enough to let me use his computer to try and re-install the firmware but no dice-same problem.

Oh and the coup de grâce: the next Creative tech support guy I spoke to said they'd be glad to charge me to fix my JB3 for me since it's out of warranty.  >:(

Back in Business!!
Did a complete uninstall/reinstall of the JB3 software and drivers on my PC and got my deck up and running again after the Creative Tech support folks lost it in what should've been routine firmware upgrade surgery and had pronounced it dead.  Better yet I have the latest driver installed and was able to upgrade the firmware to 1.20.06.
