Ive heard some adk recordings that smoke and you can get a pair for around 300-400 which isnt too much more.  But if not a lot of tapers start off with the akg 1k and personally i love the akg sound

Edit: forgot; +T brotha and welcome ;)

Id go with the Superlux. I was in your same position in June, I never really like the c1000s, so I took a chance on the Superlux mics and Ive been quite pleased and suprized with the way that they sound. My 2cents....

stearskid, you should check out my akg 391s, they might in your pricerange and sound much better than the c1000s.  you live in buffalo?  you could even come and check them out in person sometime or get some sample recordings if you'd like.

i started off with the akg's and those mics are smooth with the right pre, the high's sparkle, go akg or adk and you will be pleased, heard a couple of rode tapes and i wasnt impressed at all, cant say anything for the superlux's, but they are cheapies

Sterling,

I'd gladly get you some samples of my ADK SC-T's if your interested.. they run about 325-350 new I believe a pair.  I live down "the 90" (as you NYers call it) outside of Erie...  If you're ever in the neighborhood for a show definately let me know.  Keller Williams next Tues at a great little venue.. ;)

Take care,
Nick

I dont know if they still got them but 2 oktavas for $99 at guitar center is the way to go. The superlux is a good deal too. 2 mics,t-bar,shockmounts,windscreens for $125 is pretty sweet. They got them on ebay

I'm on team Oktava. I started with a matched pair and all the capsules for around $600. I just picked up 2 more at Guitar Center for $99. Yes, that's right, 2 condensor microphones with cardioid capsules for only $99. Since I'm interested in modding them I opened them up to have a look at the electronics. It seems Oktava has been paying a bit more attention to quality control lately, because my cheapie GC pair have better components then my "matched" pair. I haven't gotten to use the GC capsules, so I can't comment on those just yet.

Do yourself a favour and check out the Oktava MC012's

C1000s are ar really nice sound...the only thing that sucks about them is that they are friggin HUGE!

there is a guy on ebay(Recording Services) selling matched sets of Oktava's at steal of a price if you like those
currently reassembling my rig due to theft by Greyhound Bus Inc employees.
