Topic: A/D's in small 24bit recorders??

I have a friend, not on the board, looking to finally make the move from dat. The AD sections in these things, is one better than the other? I'm assuming his options are the MTII, Tascam or Edirol. He is also an SBM1 fan. Looks like if he wants to stay with it, the Sony PCM-D50 may be his only option, assuming he can find a 7pin to opti cable. He will most likely be doing 16bit only to start, keeping the transfer process as fast and as simple as possible.

I have both the R-09 and R-09HR. The 24 bit transfer is very fast and simple.

If he likes the SBM1, he should go with the D50, but skip the 7pin optical cable and sell the SBM1.  The D50 has the same SBM1 circuitry to dither down to 16bits, so he could run the D50 standalone with no need for the SBM1 itself.  I'd recommend though taping at 24bits as long as you have the recorder.

BTW, I've got a D50 and love it -- I'd highly recommend it as a small 24bit recorder.

Thanks for that info. I wasn't aware of the built in SBM. Should have been since it's a Sony .

Anyway, steve is really old school. He plugs his battery operated Nak 300's or Nak 700's into the SBM via 1/4 inch. Does the D50 have 1/4 inch inputs

I can give a 3rd vote for the D50.  It was a very well thought out unit IMO.  It does not have 1/4" inputs, only 1/8".  He would have to find another powering option.

If he is running the Naks as battery powered, I'd imagine he could use them with the D50, he'd just need to get a custom cable that went from dual female 1/4" sockets to single 1/8" mini for the D50 (or get the output of his naks modified).

For someone running stock Naks, those cables aren't usually hardwired. he'd just have to pick up an Y-cable instead, which terminates in dual XLR on the Nak sides.
