Sony D50 questions
« on: October 14, 2008, 02:53:18 PM »
Hi,

I got the d50. I've used it once and filled up the 4 GB internal storage. I thought I would get more then an a hour and a half at 24/96. (It is 16.5 MB/min correct?) What is the largest memory stick for the d50?

Is there any way to have files over 2 gb? It seperated the single take into 3 files.

Is there any firmware updates?

So far, the sound is great and the construction and feel are amazing.

I have a Sandisk MS Pro Duo 8GB.  Supposedly these aren't officially recognized but so far it has worked fine.  I get an "Unknown Media" screen on start up but it recognizes and writes to the stick fine.  If I were buying a new stick right now I'd stick with the high speed ones Sony recommends.

You can't change the 2GB limit but the D50 does seemless splits.

You should get more than an hour and a half. Heck, you should get and hour and a half for each 2 gig file.

I don't think so, for the Zoom H2, Samson says you get 115 min of 24/96 WAV audio on a 4GB card.  That's just under an hour for each 2 gig file.  (I assume that file size for 24/96 WAVs are the same no matter what the recorder).

I think what the OP needs to consider is whether he is getting any real marginal value from stepping up to 96 from 48.  I don't know the answer to that.  Here's an interesting thread on the issue, though.

I get just under 2 hours at 24/96 on the 4GB of internal memory.

My bad, I've been recording at 24/44.1 lately. Still, with an 8 gig stick, it seems like it will handle any gig I need to do.

Well I think I might try 24/48.

Any firmware updates?

What is the biggest memory stick I can use? 8 GB?

I have a 16 GB Sony pro duo Mark 2 in mine, seems to work fine in the D50 (NOT in the D1).

Can you record 24/96 with that card for complete shows / two-hour sets?

I only run at 24/96 (mostly with a Sonosax MiniR82, but have tested the D50 at that resolution).  The D50 had seamless breaks and it filled the 16 GB pro duo Mark 2 with no issues (battery life on the D50 great for this kind of extended run).  Note that I tried this (four or five times) in a controlled environment, I have not used it in the field, but see no reason to doubt it would work.

Used it some more at 24/48. No problems. I'll get the 16gb stick next paycheck. I like the mics. Sounds great so far.
