Howdy, 
  Trying to get into taping shows I attend.  I've been using a Philips 20GB mp3 player to record but would like to take a step up get some better quality, I an external microphone but I can't put the recordings on a computer.  I have an imac g4 right now, could you point out a few recording devices I could use.  I'd like to stay under a few hundred dollars in expenses.  My apple has the Garageband thing, would this be suffice for transfering from device to computer? 
I am very knew to all this, so if someyone could toss some information my way, maybe a website or something that explains it all.  I appreciate it.

The  jb3 don't work well with a mac. I had one and sold it and got a sony D8 dat deck like a year and a 1/2 ago. I would say look at the R-1 in the yard sale and get Sound Studio 3 and it is like $70 new and can do all you need. Here is the link to the R-1. http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=67826.0

The JB3 works fine with a Mac. File transfers through xNJB (http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/) are only USB 1 speed, but they still work fine.

The iRiver shows up on a Mac as an external USB drive, so file transfers are simple. The iRiver supports USB 2 also.
