typically i run this setup for rock shows:
DPA 4061 > CSbox > R-09 (Line-In)
in this case, i have to increase the level to ~27/30 to get reasonable levels.

what would one recommend for a one-man acoustic show w/ a PA?

can i go mic-in on the R-09 without it resulting in a distorted recording?  also, should the gain be set to LOW or HIGH in this case?

I have had lots of customers use the mic input on the edirol for recording LOUD shows. I think you will be fine. If you need gain that's where its going to be I would to be on the safe side set it to low first. I would also just try different settings at home with your stereo. I am sure if this is an acoustic performance you can duplicate these types of levels with a home stereo.

Almost impossible to overload the R-09 MIC input, as this has wide dynamic extending into LINE level ability.

I've had great luck using mic in (low sens), with AT853, AT822 and Senn MKE2.  Note that some mics have lower sensitivity/output than others.  Could be up to 10dB difference, with AT853 a little on the low side.

Levels up to about #25 sound great.  Going up to #30 will introduce a bit of noise, but it is still fine.  For amplified music, this is great.  For acoustic stuff (ie., no PA) you will need an external preamp.  The high-sens setting has just too much self noise.

Agreed with all here.

I can only add that I've been running pre>mic in (low gain switch setting) for all my needs since I haven't had enough non-recording down time to send my R-09 in to have the line-in jack repaired by Edirol yet.  No problems with loud music (just turn the gain down) or with quiet stuff (I keep the R-09 input under 20 or so and make up any needed gain with the external preamp).

so i'll go mic in (low sensitivity) for the show.  my spare time is limited before the show, but i'll see if i can test it out at home.

i jacked up the input to 27 going mic in and it worked fine.  ofcourse being acoustic the crowd was usually louder than the music, so i used the crowd to set my levels.  i'd be interested to see how MIC IN works with a loud electric show.   thanks to all for the input.

Thats the issue you'll face with softer acoustic stuff, you can either set gain to keep the applause from clipping or set gain to optimize the performance and let the applause clip somewhat.  Your choice.

Works fine for loud electric just turn the gain down, but don't go below level 1 or you'll mute the input.
