ACM PMD660 users...I need a push
« on: March 18, 2007, 01:54:14 PM »
I am about to pull the trigger on one but I haven't full justified it to myself yet. I love all the mics I have, the mp2 -> R-1 combo does everything I could want, and the 9100 ca pre -> ihp120 is a bulletproof stealth setup. What I am getting at is: a. what can this offer me that the others can't? and b. am I just being a super slut for even considering this? The all-in-one package is my best is reasoning to date, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Regardless, Martin is out and a decent finish will push him right to the top. I sure hope smoke can jump a few postions... it has been a rough season.

1) mics > mod 660 can be used for open and stealth just as easily as mp2>r1 and 9100>h120.  it actually would be an easier set up to stealth imo.  one box, less cables, less powering issues, etc.

2) you could sell some of your other gear since a mod 660 sounds better than what you have now imo.  therefore, making it a minimal investment for a major upgrade.

3) definitely consider the wcm 660 instead of the acm, if you have one of the updated 660s.  i know doug offers the warm version, but i think it's only for a certain range of serial numbers so you'd have to check with him to see if yours is in the range.  imo, the wcm sounds better than the acm.

1) good point
2) its not a financial matter and I like the other, so they stay. I just have the extra coin to spend and thought this would be a nice investment (in my happiness)
3) It is being bought brand new from him, so I can get what I please.

Tony needs a strong finish, badly, as does Jr.

definitely talk to him about the wcm version then.

Thanks. I didn't see it on their mod page for the 660, so I would not have know if not for the comment.

the "all-in-one" factor is the ultimate seller for this box IMO. It is so nice to have such a compact box for your rig. I've used the UA-5 for a long time, but that thing is still a little bigger and you will always have some battery hanging off of it, at risk to be unplugged for whatever reason.

The other week, some friends asked me to check out their friends reggae band. Not knowing if they were gonna suck, I brought the rig just in case (at853rx > ACM 660). It comfortably rested with me in a booth while we observed the first set and ate. Set break comes, I ask permission, and I'm flying hypers DFC for a fun second set. The band loved the recording. That is what taping is all about. :)

Yes it is limited to 16-bit. For the winter/indoor season, it is all I need. The 24-bit advantage for indoor PA shows is so minimal IMO. I would prefer 24-bit for pure acoustic acts, but you will still walk away with a nice recording, no doubt. I remember Doug saying a 24-bit mod to the 660 would be POSSIBLE, but somewhat tedious. ;)

If I get approved for Lasik, I MIGHT have to sell, but I'll come back with a WCM unless Doug or Busman comes out with something similiar size and 24-bit (mod Fostex FR-2LE).

IMNSHO, you can't beat the acm660 for 16bit 8)

I agree, for 16 bit it doesn't get any better. The only disadvantage I can think of is you only have xlr input no other i/o options. But even that isn't a big deal, to me it just means no patchers.

Recent moe. HOB with the WCM

http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=504934

Taped from the floor against the wall in front of the SBD.

They only let us get about 1' above the lip of the wall so you can hear the floor but other than that...  8)

If you pull the trigger on the 660 do yourself a favor and invest in a Lexar Card.
Yes, but what do you HEAR?
