Title: Service manual for Sony PCM-7040
Post by: larrysellers on June 10, 2015, 10:29:58 AM
I have a copy of the operation manual but I still need the service manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I really underestimated how complicated this thing is compared to my R500. I can't even seem to get it play a tape and show levels.

Make sure the clock is set to internal and the correct Sampling Freq

Unfortunately I only have a couple of different copies of the owners manual

Also I am pretty sure the CUE button needs to be active in order to play a tape

Thanks for all the suggestions but I think there is more going on than user error. I have yet to see the servo lock (green light) illuminate and I think that may be the problem.

My 7040 came with a bad loading mech (someone fished a tape out and damaged the gears), bad pinch roller, and dead capstan motor - I replaced the loading mech and capstan motor from a used donor Sony SDT-7000 DDS drive.

For the pinch roller most any Sony DDS/DAT pinch roller will work - you can buy a new one from Paul at prodigital for about $30 shipped.   Full Compass used to sell these as well.

The 7040 has well documented error codes as well - that can help you pinpoint the issue.  Open the top and watch the tape load as well.

Thanks again. That is all great info.

Head hours is definitely available via the standard menu and shown in the user manual
Under the Display Menu go to Hour T - This will show you the head hours (Section 7-3-5 of the rev 1 manual)

Error count ->  there is an error log you can access under the Display menu ECC (Section 7-3-5)

You can also connect a serial cable to the RS232 port and get more advanced output and settings see:

Not very straight forward to hook up a serial cable but looks doable.

thanks this thing is like the space shuttle compared to any deck i’ve used. it def logs errors and i can go back and play from that point, but i wanted something like the r500 where i can display the ‘00xx  00xx’ type errors
