Title: Virtual Memory settings (win xp)
Post by: Chanher on December 11, 2003, 06:48:41 PM
I'm running Win XP.  While working on audio files in CEP (see my CEP Clip Restoration thread in this forum) XP said I was running low on Virtual Memory.  I found the place where I change the settings for Virtual Memory but I haven't touched anything because I am notorious for doing dumb things.  I currently have 96 MB allocated.  It also lists 96 MB for the intial size and 192 for the maximum size.  Torwards the bottom it recommends using 500 some MB for the Total Paging File Size for all drives.  What settings shall I set based on this info?  Once again, thanks for the replies, I have posted many questions!

Virtual Memory defined:  "Temporary storage used by a computer to run programs that need more memory than it has. For example, programs could have access to 4 gigabytes of virtual memory on a computer's hard drive, even if the computer has only 32 megabytes of RAM. The program data that does not currently fit in the computer's memory is saved into paging files. See also paging file; RAM."

if you have enough free harddrive space, set your memory size higher.  i have my pagefile size set at 2Gigs, although i have 1Gig of physical memory in my computer.  i often work with .WAV files that are in the excess of 1.5Gigs.

set your vm to use double the size of ram you have in your system.  make the min and max the same value.  that should help.

I'm not sure what this does.  Seems to me that it uses you HD as RAM for a while?

yeah looks like if you're running a program with a particularly heavy application it uses your HD as RAM.  Is this right?

higher amounts (eg 2GB ) won't do much good really if you have 512 MB memory...the 'rule' is 1.5 x your RAM but up around 1GB RAM you'll find it won't use it.   I've set mine to a static 768MB(min/max the same) and it does just fine....i'm working on an 80 track 24bit tune right now and it's got no problems, so a 2 track 600MB file shouldn't be a problem.  I'd say 1GB would be as high as necessary, beyond that there is no performance gained.

tweakxp.com is a good site with lots of tips but i'd be wary as some can have adverse effects if you are not knowledgeable of MS workings...

http://www.musicxp.net/ is a great site for the audio minded....

what tungsten said. you should set it to 150% your physical memory, with a max of 1 GB. over 1 GB the swap file gats too fragmented, and seek times get too high.

I think there are also some performance benefits from using a different physical drive than the one with your OS and apps i.e. in most pc setups, something other than the c drive.  Partitioned drives don't count...

I have 1024MB (2-512 sticks), so I shouldn't set the Virtual higher than that?
